Recommended Setup for Engine Drop
 

I have wanted a 911 for about 30 years now and am finally at the point where I might be able to afford a project.

I have rebuilt many non-Porsche engines in my life, but they were all the type that can be pulled with a cherry picker. I don't currently have a lift, but will factor that into the overall budget. Can I get some recommendations on what I would need for a lift and rolling scissor table (or whatever you recommend) to drop an engine?

While a lift is nice, it is not necessary. The first 3+ times I dropped my engine I used (1) floor jack, some jackstands and some blocks of wood under the jackstands to get the rear high enough in the air to slide the motor out once it was on the ground. It's pretty simple actually. If you have a cherry picker, you could use it to help raise the rear end too.

Second what Tom says.....I dropped mine with a floor jack too. Made an engine dolly with some plywood and castors. Its really very simple to drop these engines.

While you can do it w/o a lift, a proper two post lift will make your life SO much easier if you have the $ and room for it. I use an 4 wheel ATV jack (Sears?) and simply lower the lift to put the engine weight on it, unbolt, and lift the car while slowly working the engine back to clear the transmission rod from the tunnel and then up she goes leaving the engine/transmission on a rolling platform.

no lift here either... I do run the front up on ramps so the car angle is not very steep. I also have several 2x12x16 planks I put under the 6ton stands of the rear... its cake...
