sticky speedometer on '87
On my '87 Carrera, my speedometer has the habit of sticking on 0 until the car reaches 30 or 40 miles an hour or so. Not always, but quite often. Then it jumps right up to the proper indicated speed, and it will not stick again unless the car is brought to a complete stop.
Gently tapping the gauge face with my fingernail will unstick the needle. Who knows what is causing this sticking? Is it something that either Palo Alto or North Hollywood Speedometer would have to fix, or can I do it myself? If the former, I think I'll just live with it. Gives the car "character," and all...

My tach is doing the same thing, but only when it heats up. I asked the forum, and one guy said there is a little bit of convex shape to the glass and it could be in backwards. Since my dash was all new, I'm thinking that might be the case. Except I haven't pulled it apart yet because that cuts into driving time.

Please note that this is not my tachometer, but my speedometer.

I agree, but if you look at the housing they're both the same. Also, they both pin at the center. Actually they are identicle. JMO

My Spedo on my 87 did the same thing, then it eventually stopped working. Replacing the spedo sending unit fixed the problem.

I don't believe it is a sending unit problem. Making it unstick by tapping the glass leads me to believe it is mechanical in nature.

I know this thread goes back quite a way, but I'm having this problem, and my speedo was rebuilt 3 years ago - does anyone have a solution to this problem, or do I need to send the dang thing out again?

My needle has been sticking on and off for over 3 yrs and 12000 miles. At about 25MPH it will work again but under 25MPH I have to tap the glass. The strange thing is I can't duplicate this on my workbench.

Mine still does this and I guess I've learned to live with it. Probably the solution is to send it to North Hollywood Speedometer for repair.
