Wiper Linkage differences?

One of the spindles on my wiper linkage has completely seized. The car is a '76 Carrera 3, used in the UK all year round so gets more than its fair share of bad weather.
The original wiper crank linkage part number is 911 628 961 01, which was used through to Carrera 3.2 in 1984 and then superceded by 911 628 036 01 in 1985.
Does anyone know what the difference between the two might be? Could I use the later version on my car - getting the later vresion is much easier than the later version.
The original is described in PET as crank drive with POS 6-12. Anyone know what this might mean?
