1976 911S no start when engine is warm
Just imported a near perfect 1976 911 from California. Started on first turn of key after 8 weeks at sea and every time since until 3 days ago. Now the car will not start when engine is warm. When cold no problems at all and drives beatifully.
Anybody had same problem or knows what the problem might be ? Much appreciated. Rasmus Stokholm Denmark |

I would check the fuel accumulator.

I have a 1975 California 911S. Mine does something similar, but it's rarely a real problem for me. It only happens when I've been running it on the highway for quite a while and then I turn off, run in the store for 5 minutes or so, then come back out to start. It either won't turn over at all, or barely turns over and won't start. I usually just have to wait another 10 minutes or so for it to cool down, but then it starts right up again. I've just learned to accept it now as part of my car's personality. However, like I said, It only happens when I've been running it pretty hard for an extended period of time. (maybe on the highway, for over an hour). Think it might just be an issue with these midyear californias that have all the heat issues.

when you say doesnt start, does it crank?
It if doesnt crank, you probably need to rebuild the starter solenoid if it does crank, I'd say fuel accumulator.

I have a similar issue on mine. Not sure when you say "no start" thought. Does it crank fine and doesnt start or is the starter slow to turn the motor over. My issue is the starter is slow. My mechanic suggested going to a stronger starter. I am currently looking for a replacement starter but I am sure that is the issue. This is assuming you checked the battery and wiring.

The other day, Rasmus was visiting me. It cranks fine, and the battery is strong, so it's not a solenoid problem. Regarding the fuel accumulator, yes it could be that. The fuel pump is running, you can hear it buzz. What is the common problem regarding the accumulator, and how do you fix it? Could it be a cold start switch or something?
Best regards Jesper

CIS troubleshooting......
Quote:
There could be several things that could cause your problem/s. If you suspect the FA, check the residual pressure. A simple way to bench test a FA (fuel accumulator) is to test if the diaphragm is broken or ruptured. Remove the FA from the car. For 3-port FA, fill the FA with fuel and observe for any leak at the drain port. There should be no drip coming out from the drain port. For the two-port FA, unscrew the plug and perform similar test. If you have an access to a fuel injection gauge kit, use it for residual pressure tests (FA and check valve). Knowing your control and system pressures would give you better perspective in your trouble shooting. Keep us posted. Tony |
