My KS P/Cs came in today.
They are allot different looking than my old 8.5:1 pistons. I called EBS again, and DOn said that it didn't matter which P/C goes where because they are all in the same tolerance group and none of them should be out of whack. I really want to install them but I'm afraid if I do then it turns out later that my heads have to be machined than I'll have to remove the cylinders again to put thicker base gaskets under them. So I guess I'll just have to wait. But they are finally here and look good. I was told the flat portion of the crown faces the speark plugs. Everyone concur w/ that??? Should I go ahead and install the pistons? |

you won't have any fitting , or clearance problems. the engines came with either one, stock. the dome goes to the left as you look at each piston.

Hey John,
On my pistons the flat area (or valley) is to the upper left corner and the highest point (or crown) is to the lower right. That is the way that EBS told me to install them. He said that the valley area should point to the "spark" (thanks Norm )plug. Oh please tell me I didn't put them on upside down. That was allot of friggin' work! |

********************NEWS FLASH********************
22 June 01 Accociated Press release: Sources say the SC World Domination Plot (AKA SCWDP) will be on hold until further notice because its founder, Leland Pate, installed 6 pisons in his motor upside down. Just like a dumbass. The SCWDP has terorized the Porsche community in recent months. President Bush has vowed to bring an end to the recent assults on 3.2 Carrera Porsches with Voodoo pin needles. A top Pentagon spokeperson said today that every attempt to bring this organization down was being made. |

....."Sources say the SC World Domination Plot (AKA SCWDP) will be on hold until further
notice because its founder, Leland Pate, installed 6 pisons in his motor upside down."..... It's no wonder...he should have used Pistons and all would have been well. Will the SCWDP ever recover from this gaff?? |

Lee,
I know you don't like the Vol. 3-6 of the factory manuals very much, but there is a picture of the CIS piston with the 'hump' and flat up, towards the intake valve ... 7.3 - 2/1. The same exact pic is also in Haynes on p. 253! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 06-22-2001).] |

I tried to edit the post for the typos like three times and my PC kept locking up. I almost threw the mouse against the wall.
So quit givin' me *****! ![]() Warren, I looked through every page of the manual you gave me. there is no photo of the pistons I have. Performance handbook, my '78-'83 factory manuals...none of them. The haynes manual has a picture of the old type of Mahle pistons I pulled out of the car, on page 253. These new KS pistons have more less three sides. The crown of the pistons is kinda off in a corner in relation to the wrist pin. Island911 and John Walker are right, Island emailed me a pic from the Bentley SC manual and there is a nice photo of a KS 9.3:1 piston with an arrow saying "this side up". My SC manual is at work...wouldn't you know it. The gent from EBS has a different idea of what the "Flat side" of the pistons looks like. I was thinking the flat side as the large concave area. I guess the flat side is supposed to be the smaller area... I even asked if it was the bowl shaped area....ah hell it dosen't matter.... miscommunication. At any rate it isn't embarrasing as dropping your motor. Maybe I'll post a pic to keep anyone else from getting confused. [This message has been edited by Leland Pate (edited 06-22-2001).] |

Warren, you may be right.
That picture in the Haynes manual might be the KS type. I noticed today that the skirts don't look like the Mahles. .... ......damnit. |

Lee,
I wasn't suggesting a brand, just that CIS pistons as a group, all have the large 'bowl' that is mostly of a 'flat' nature, and the 'hump' that is a sort of pop-up. That pic, and the one on the Vol. 3 page of the '72-'83 manuals I cited is a 2.7 CIS piston ... but as I said, all CIS pistons are pretty much alike! But, the important thing is that the 'hump' goes up closest to the intake valve! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Lee,
At least you didn't get the two cases together like I did with my 914 engine and try to put the little plastic dampening rings on the case bolts like the Haynes manual suggests, only to find out that you had to take the cases apart again to put it in with the bolts already through to put it in, then, have to take the motor apart again because you dropped something in the motor...then, you install aftermarket hydraulic lifters, only to have to take them out because they need to be filled with oil before they go in the engine, then put them back in only to have to take them out again because they aren't full enough... Man, rebuilding that motor, I did everything, I mean EVERYTHING, twice! |
