Late Model Window Gaskets in '78 SC?
I've read it mentioned in a couple of posts that the windshield and rear window gaskets from a "3.2" can be used in an earlier model 911. Evidently, the "3.2" gaskets don't have the metal trim strip, which sounds quite appealing.
My car originally had chrome trim, which the PO painted black. Currently, it looks terrible, as every little chip is magnified by the chrome gleaming through the black paint. Repainting this trim will only result in a temporary fix, and I'm sure it would get bent to heck if I tried to have it powdercoated. I'm not concerned about the car looking 100% factory, so could I use the later style window gaskets on my '78SC? Again, the thought of getting rid of the metal trim, which will eventually chip and discolor, is quite appealing. Regarding the later model trim gaskets: 1. During what model years were these newer gaskets used? 2. Can they be used as a direct replacment for the gaskets (front and rear) on my '78SC? 3. Are the windshield and/or rear window a different size, or can I use my existing rear window with the newer gasket (the windshield needs replacing anyway)? 4. I currently have a leak in both corners of my windshield. Do the newer gaskets provide a better seal? By the way, did the newer vent window gaskets also do away with the metal trim? Thanks!! ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |
Your going to have to go later than the 3.2 to find window rubber without the metal trim pieces. The 3.2 still has them, like the SC.

Michael,
1. I think Roland meant to say 3.6. The trimless gasket started use with the 1989 Carrera 4. Just ask the parts man for a C2/964 windshield gasket, they'll know the deal. 2. Yes. 3. No. Use your existing rear. The silhouette and glass never changed until the 996. 4. If anything the older gaskets provide a better seal, due to the tensioning that the trim provides. I've heard of a few leaky 964 cars. If you use that newer gasket, just be conscientious about inspecting for potential leaks and be sure to seal the corners. I don't know if the later vent gaskets do away with the trim- but if you get rid of yours, may I please have it!! I've been hunting for a nice straight driver side trim piece for a long time. Mine has been damaged in storage. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif -d ------------------ Dave 1972 911T (E motor) RSR replica project http://members.nbci.com/dtwinters/garage/ |
Thanks Dave,
If I replace the vent window gaskets, the trim pieces are yours........ ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |
Dave,
If you find some black trim, I will trade you my real nice chrome trim in exchange. I was going to powdercoat them. So let me know... Randy ------------------ http://www.seraphimarts.com/save_flash.html '78 911 SC |
Hello
My mistake I know one of the last MY 89 convertible and this had allready trimless windscreenrubber. Don´t nail me but i think the 964 has a glued in windscreen with a hard rubber outher trim. Can remeber renewing glas on a 91 C4 with airbags and a RS with nothing. Hey, do we need an expert ? Will look tomorow or on the weekend. Geting old. Rear vent windows on a 78 ? rare ! Grüsse |
Has anyone been able to confirm the gasket and glass information? I'm planning to have my windshield replaced this week, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks! ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |
