Steering problems!!

Recently my 78SC has been making a grinding type noise when turning left. in city driving only. Highway driving is no problem as the turns are slight. Well today it started making this noise while turning to the right as well. Sometimes it feels like is it catching mid turn.

Any thoughts before I start tearing into her?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Is the sound in the steering column or at the front wheels/suspension?

It could be your column bushing disinegrating or your horn contact needing some grease.

Front suspension noise could be wheel bearings or brake caliper dragging.

Check the easy stuff first.

Thanks Wayne,

I think that I have narrowed it down to the bearing in the smugglers box. I shot some lube in that area and it seems to have helped. Time to order another part for a weekend project. Woo Hoo - no yard work this weekend.

Just in case you find your problem is further up the steering column, remember our host carries a great fix for a wobbly steering wheel. It's a self lubricating MSD Nylon steering column bushing. It's easy to install, and unlike the 928 steel sleeve fix, it's easy to remove.
PP P/N PEL-ML-STR.

Also, I might add that we're close to providing the NLS split ring bushing for the early cars. Testing is going on now, Pelican Parts will carry it soon...
