Yeah, but those hybrid cars have what basically amounts to a gas generator, I believe. They have a 1L gas engine that works in tandem with the electric to keep it charged and help when more power is needed.
Actually I believe Prof F Porsche actually did that a long time ago while he was still tinkering with electric cars.

Indeed they go have a gas generator.

But its the closest to a useable solution that anyone has yet brought to market. Although Hondo do lose money on each car.

Lest we not forget that most forms of electricity or power are not free/renewable, or at least are not environmentaly friendly.

So the Honda is a prety good solution.

The engine is kinda clever in that it chrages under braking etc.. Although I dont think its that clever, it seems kinda obvious to me.

Its bloody ugly though.

Did you read the top speed of 50mph? I mean, put it in another car, not a 911. I have no problem putting an electric engine in my car down the road if that's what it comes to, but it's got to be faster and better than my combustion engine...and it has to be a german made motor. No american or ricer crap in my car.

Robert, I read in a newspaper article about BMWs hybrid hydrogen power plants. BMW said they would not market such a car as 'hydrogen' powered because their marketing analyses showed too many people heard 'hydrogen' and thought 'Hindenberg'. :rolleyes:

I wonder, aren't electric cars merely swapping one form of pollution for another? How many tons of coal (or gas, or hydro power) are used in order to generate the power to charge up this car?

Yeah Brian, Too bad. I figure the petroleum industry can't let this technology happen for at least another ten years. Heck, what would man fight over if we ran our cars on tap water. Way too world changing.

The petroleum industry does not cover up, bury, steal, sabotage, or otherwise sidetrack any technology that leads to improved fuel economy. It just doesn't happen. This one is on the urban myth top ten.
No 100 mpg carburetors, no perpetual motion machines, nothing.

One of them stated that it takes MORE energy to create 1,000 hp with 100 engines than 1 engine that is rated as 1,000 hp......

Think of every engine out there as itty bitty generators....electric cars may have their limitations, but for BASIC city transportation, dump trucks, garbage trucks, buses, mail trucks, etc. The electric vehicle is a good idea.

Most will spend the idle time re-charging at night when load capacity at the power plants is low.....the plants...at least in the west, have control devices that limit their pollution. The coal plants back east can too...but the high priced lawyers and bought off politicians have delayed retrofitting the old plants....

You MAY think you hate the US EPA, but there is a method to their madness...

Read up on the reasoning behind the electric trend, it may not be for you but it does have it's uses....

BTW....I once got a Hybrid Prius up 110 mph....

I have read that Hydrogen cells show a lot of promise. And prototypes have been built. But at the moment it is very exspensive. i.e. millions to produce one car or batch of cells.

So I dont think its public perception that will stop these things coming to market.

LPG is very popular as well. Not a long term solution, but cleaner than petrol or diesel I think.

NASA has been using hydrogen cells for years. I just hate to think that the "desktop computer" is the only general benefit we will get from 30 yrs of "space exploration". :confused:

I don't understand why all new cars, even ultra- high performance ones, couldn't have an auxiliary electric motor just for steady-speed cruising. Once you set the cruise-control at 70, even a 996tt doesn't need much HP to roll steady. It would charge off of brakes and other scavenged power, and if it goes dead you switch back to IC power. Seems logical, but I'm no engineer.
