Seatbelt/Harness Suggestions
Gentlemen:
I am looking for a solution to my lap belt problem. I would like shoulder belts or a not too complicated harness system. The car is a 68 SWB 911S so I am having a difficult time finding a solution without breaking out a welding torch. Suggestions? Thanks in advance. ![]()

you can use a Brey-Krause harness truss, but you have to drill into you B pillar.... unfortunately..

drill the b pillar for attachment points for a harness bar. The LEAST amount of welding you can install a roll bar. the front feet will have the welded plates but the rear legs will bolt thru the rear wheel well. I think thats the only way with the least amount of welding. Plus there is an issue with harnesses with stock seats as they will split off the shoulders in an impact. Need race seats which then neccesitate at a minimun the roll bar. This has been discussed on here before, you need to consider the whole safety system. harness type, seat type, and rollover device type. they all go hand in hand, and can be more dangerous if not installed in accordance with each other. Mostly depends on your intended use.

I am slowly restoring a '68 -- yours looks great, I wish mine was on the road!
When I looked into the seat belt issue, I found that the biggest concern are the bottom mounting locations, which are much too high to be safe. There is information on this in the archive, search for swb+seat+belt. When I replaced my floors and rockers, I created new welded mounting points in at the same locations as the 84 911. I think the same thing can be achieved (without welding) using the "big bolts and washers" approach. There may also be ways to attach the belts to your seat frame, but I didn't look into it too closely. As for the shoulder attach, there are factory points below the windows. Unfortunately they are lower than they ideally should be. For my car, I haven't decided if I should stick with that point or add a harness bar. I have been told that the B pillar on the early cars wasn't as strong as the later ones and shouldn't be used without reinforcement, which might explain why none of the vendors sells a SWB specific harness bar. Weltmeister does sell a bolt-in b pillar harness bar, just not for SWB cars. You might want to look at this belt and the associated mounting hardware: KT109-3-NON-901 |

Thanks Mike. I think I'm going to go with your shoulder belt suggestion. Good luck with the restoration. Mine took 3 years and is still not done!
