CV joint boot clamps, what works best?
 

I'm rebuilding my CV's on the 73, I thought I had enough of the factory clamps for the boot to flange joint, I don't. The local dealer can't get them for a week. Has anybody tried anything else that works? Tie wraps seem a bit scary, hose clamps maybe.
Seems like VW uses a similar clamp (crimp type). Anybody tried anything that works?

On another topic, my local auto parts store is raving about a gasket making material called "The Right Stuff". I think Permatex makes it, the can claims it's great for oil pans, valve cover gaskets etc. Use no gasket, just this stuff. Looks like cheese wiz to me. Anybody tried it?

black tie wraps...get the long thick ones...black keeps from degrading when exposed to UV...but that is for the thin part...the thick part with the flange...hmmm...I think a tie wrap would be fine...or buy the boots from Pelican with the flange attached

Use tie raps! Don't worry about the color. If your car is upside down enough to rot plastic tie raps either its on a body and fender jig, or you need driver training!

So Randy, UV-unstable material will only break down in direct sunlight? Hmm!

Will the white one last between CV joint service intervals? Yes, likely. The thermal radiation spectrum, from your hot engine, is mostly in the infrared.

Ok, I gave up finding factory clamps, everybody is out of them in my area. I tried the local import parts store, they had a clamp I've never tried. I going to try to upload a photo of the clamp and what It looks like in place. They are cheap (relatively, at 2.00 each) and seem to be strong enough to last. What I like best is they don't get in the way of the CV joint bolts. Anyway, I think the tie wraps would have worked as well but thought I'd give these a try.

Hey Bruce, not that this isn't a beaten down topic already, but have you tried to pull those stainless straps apart? Doesn't take much, I bought some of those for mine, then in the end, found that zip ties actually "outperformed" the stainless from NAPA...

Yea, I was afraid of that, oh well. We'll see how they hold up. There may be zip ties in my future. I takes alot of force to close the straps, I was hoping they would be hard to get apart.
No big deal compared to what I found when I was working in the area. I'll post a picture tomorrow. That's what I get for looking under my car....
