I just wave and put on a *****-eating grin. :D Flashing might be confused with fuzz-warning. No waving or flashing at Pepper-SUV's. I wear a gold chain, no Piloti-shoes, no comb-over, no tattoos, no earring, no hoodie. |
Forget about flashing - it's illegal in my state (NJ) and many others. Probably to prevent notifying drivers of upcoming speed traps.
There have been some great threads about "the rules for waving" Interestingly, I also get the "cool car" wave, thumbs up, or nod from owners of newer Mustang GTs and the like. Also from drivers of older muscle cars. On a major highway a year or two ago, a new Mustang Shelby GT500 and I did a mutual "thumbs up" after passing each other a few times to check each other out. The year before that, a repro Cobra 427 S/C and I had a raucous "show me what you've got" run down a local franchise freeway. Not racing, but showing each other some performance & sound (fyi, my '87 3.2 has a Dansk 2-out & a Fabspeed premuffler). Bottom line: I'm probably more likely to get a wave from certain non-Porsche-driving "car guys" than I am from a newer 911. And I wave to them, if I like their ride. BTW... Oh yeah, guys driving ricers seem to have a competition / inferiority complex thing. My attitude: I'm driving a PORSCHE 911 - I've got nothing to prove ================================================== ========================= Here's a old thread that has the "Rules"..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/231387-porsche-wave-ten-simple-rules.html That old thread regarding "the wave" is great - so much so that I summarized it a few years back when I first saw it. IMHO, the best one is from an SWB owner (John Kramer): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a representative of the '64-68 community I would like to add: 1) SWB's are so rare by the time you see one from the front and can make out the longer horn grills, it's either too late to wave, or the car has rusted away; 2) By the time you see one from the side, and notice the tiny gap between the torsion tube cover and the wheel arch, it's too late to wave, or rust has begun to form; 3) By the time you see one from the back, and see the angled "911" script in gold, or the split engine lid grille, it's too late to wave, and the car is gone in a haze of Weber smoke. Therefore, if you find yourself in a situation where SWB's are likely to be encountered, which is likely to be (a) a concours or the parade; or (b) outside of a rust removal/restoration shop, please do the following. a) Boxster and 996/7 owners, please put your beer in the cupholder and salute; b) 930 owners, please stop pointing at the boost gauge and wave; c) 2.7 owners, please stop pointing at the oil temperature gauge and wave;and d) 356 owners, please take your finger off the page of the NLA reproduction parts catalog, and wave to those whose parts are TRULY NLA! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And from "larry47us": ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1- 356's get a Wave and Salute 2- ’67-‘73 911's get Two Thumbs Up 3- '74-‘77 911's get a Wave of Respect or Sympathy (your choice) 4- '78-‘83 911’s get the secret SCWDP Handshake 5- ’84-‘98 911's get an Enthusiastic Wave 6- 914's get a Knowing Smile and a Nod 7- 924, 928, 944, 968 get Eye Contact and a Nod 8- Boxsters get a wave only if they wave first 9- '99-‘05 911's - see Boxster 10- Cayenne owners get a raised eyebrow 11- "Special" Porsches (anything not covered previously), use your best judgment ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
I recently got flashed by a Speedster rep, I flashed back, is this the right thing to do?
|
No, you're going to go to jail
|
I knew it! next time will try to run it off the road

i too agree that the some people who drive the newer porsches are not porsche guy
at heart,i remember back in the 70s when i drove my 911e,everyone returned my thumb sign if they saw me and its very noticeable back then.now i drive a 86 and the other day when i try to strike a conversation to a guy parked next to me outside a petsmart store, i asked what year is his (a very nice and new one) and told him mine is an 86 and all he said was its a different breed , smiled at me and got into the car.may be he was afraid that i would start the porsche talk and he has no idea how to talked to me. |
Great thread. Here in Portland Oregon, fair number of Porsches. I usually flash and/or wave. But I guess i find the same with newer 911s. Sad, but they are usually too old to see me. :)

I just got a wave from a 996(?) owner - he's a neighbor I never met, and I was taking her out for a test drive after the brake line swap. I think he gets it and it was very much appreciated.
There are 1 or 2 Cayman owners in the area, but the drivers are female and usually on the cell (there I said it). I usually wave if I can identify the oncoming car in time - and I used to do it when I had the bike and the wrangler - very cool when it's mutual. |

I wave at fellow air-cooled 911s, BMW 2002s, BMW airheads, and any other vintage vehicles that may catch my eye at the time. |
3- '74-‘77 911's get a Wave of Respect or Sympathy (your choice)
It should be respect if the car is running since the driver obviously knows how to keep these fine motors in tip top shape. :D |

All females should required to flash whether in a P car or not. Can some one steer me to the thread about headlights? See first sentence.

^ I forgot about that poll. Looks like wave is still alive with MILFs in second place.SmileWavy Quote:
While out in my '88 Carrera last summer I was given the one finger salute from a redneck hillbilly (yes we have them in CT too) in a clapped out OJ Simpson era Bronco with, I ***** you not, "Big Foot Monster Truck in the Making" painted with a brush(classy) on the tailgate. At the next light he yells "Thats how you get run over". Apparently the left lane is the piece of ***** 4x4 lane. WTF! Who knew? |
I usually wave and flash at any of the "sporty" P cars. The SUVs not so much and I have no clue what I would do with a Panamera as I would most likely be stunned into the curb by it's sheer weirdness.

Thats funny, ;) sure it wasn't at the time.

I don't think it is the city so much as it is whether early or late model cars. I have received waves in LA/Boulder wherever if I am in my early 911 from other early Porsches. But no waves from later model P cars in large/ small cities.
|
So just today, on my morning commute into Boulder, I see a very red, very low and very wide 997 Turbo heading towards me. I give a flash and a wave (just lifted my fingers from the wheel) and early 30 something shaved head w/expensive shades doesn't even acknowledge my presence....ugh....dork. I mean, I supposed that my car doesn't cost as much as a new set of his wheels/tires, but I HAVE TO double de-clutch heal-toe shift to go from 4th to second while on the brakes, and can't rely on ABS PSSB or any other acronym to save my ass when I'm working behind the wheel.
It's all about heritage and respect for the breed...my car goes fast because it was designed for a driver. One who has to think, plan and work his skills. His car goes fast because he spent a ton of cash and presses the buttons. It's the ones who do acknowledge me and wave, smile or flash that I'd like to have a beer with and talk about cars. The others...well, they "bought in" and just don't get it. RUSH got it right...the smell of well weathered oil, hot metal and oil..shifting and drifting, the blur of the landscape, every nerve aware! Cheers mates...keep on waving and flashin :) |
I try to flash all porsches, save the SUVs. I've noticed that the 914 guys typically get the most kick out of it, likely because they get looked down on a lot by "true porsche guys." Every now and then I get surprised, flashed by new 997 turbos or boxsters. So why not take the .6 seconds out of my life to either make someone feel good or have them wonder "hey, why did that porsche flash me? Is that a thing?"
On speed traps, I flash like a mutha. I also notice that the cars behind me do not, and I rarely get warned by oncoming traffic it's a true shame, and a sign that people are losing the sense of community and receding into a "me first, me last" mentality. I would happily fight the charges on "obstruction of justice" or whatever bull**** they've cooked up. They're out there so people slow down. If I flash, people slow down in a measured way prior to the trap. If the people are speeding and see a cop car, they hit the brakes, making a dangerous situation. So officer, what you're saying is that you're out there not for increased safety, but for purely revenue reasons? I would love to get that on the news. I love the fact that they ignore reckless driving, non-functioning safety equipment, cell phones, tailgaters, and just go for the easy money. I hate speed traps. Can you tell? |
You would wipe their a$$ in a road course because I suspect they have alot more car than they can handle and that's truely a shame. The vintage cars rock and we are the legacy of Porsche. Hopefully someday those guys will trade the silver spoon in for a wevo or a hargett.
