antenna and black wire?

I recently changed out my radio, all the wires were somewhat easy to figure out. However my large black antenna wire (simple enough) also had a black seperate wire attached. Could this be a seperate ground? I thought the antenna wire itself had its shield wire as a ground. Please advise?

Your car has the windshield antennae (wires embedded in the glass), correct?

The windshield antennae has a booster which is powered by that smaller wire. You can splice that to the wire from the head unit (typically blue) that is normally used to provide 12V to a power antennae, to provide power for the booster when the radio is on.

Wavey, yes I do have the windshield antenna and according to the new radio the power for the electric antenna (which I do not have) is orange. Would this be correct.

Yes - all you need is to provide 12 volts to the booster whenever the radio is on. The wire from your radio that would signal a power antennae to extend does that. I just wired a Porsche CDR-220 into my '88 Carrera that way.

putting 12v to that black antenna wire will really boost your radio's reception.

most of the newer radios if seen the orange wire is for illumination , blue is usually the power on antenna or amp signal wire ...........

I went and double checked the wiring diagram that came with the radio and it does show the orange wire to be power for a power antenna, so far so good.

That's weird, they're normally blue and as 80-911SC said, orange for illumination. But either would be a 12-volt source, although not sure what the dash light dimmer would do to the voltage? But whatever, if it's working...
