Shift Handle Issue
Ok.. So Im driving the car this weekend. Enjoying the new EFI, 72 degrees, breezy, sunny... and when I go to shift my shift handle rotates. I get home and open it up and this is what I find... with almost no effort I can remove the handle. Here is a pic of the pelican part.... ($261!!!) and you can see on mine that the thing just pulled out.
Anyone else run into this? JB weld? Replace? Thanks in advance... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269914080.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269914097.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269914111.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269914121.jpg |
Take it out and weld it. The same thing happened to the PO of my '84 and he just had it welded. This was 7 years ago and it's still holding just fine.

JB should hold it, but welding it would be the preferable method
you could also try a force fit, put it together and then at 6 an 12 strike with cold chisel and mallet to pinch it |
Believe it or not this is a sort of common thing. The factory brazes the rod to the lower piece. It is best to weld it together.
I had this happen on a new factory short shift kit. I had just put it in and a couple days later backing the car out of the garage the shaft is just rotating in the lower piece. I took it back apart and welded the tube to the lower piece with a mig welder. That was 6 years ago. I would not JB weld it. It take quite a bit of rotating force every time you shift. |
You could also doing a hole and screwing it no ???
With specials screws like used for the shift rod . Just an idea..... |
I like this idea. I cant weld, but I can do this with no issues... Thanks

Thanks all for your feedback.

do it right and have it braised somewhere for a few dollars. you can not go wrong with that decision and not to worry again.
