Shift knob won't go on all the way
 

I tried installing the OEM shift knob back onto the lever today, using the correct crush sleeve, but it won't go on the last inch. I had to beat it with a hammer and block of wood just to get it this far, and I don't want to risk pounding harder or it might break. And these little jewels are expensive to replace. Isn't it supposed to fit all the way down to the little ledge? It's on so tight now that any attempt to remove it will surely end in tragedy. Any words of wisdom to share?

The sleeve slid to far up in nob jamming . slip a open wrench the same size as shaft under flange then tap up to remove

I thought Porsche stopped using crush sleeves when they introduced the Carrera in 1984? I thought 1984-1989 used a nut under the shifter cap to connect the knob to the stick.

The little ledge is for the leather boot, it should be just like you have it if it fits tight. If you try to pound it down or try to remove it it might crack and there expensive. If it's tight, leave it alone.

The nut under the shifter cap didn't start until the intro of the G50. From 84-86, it's still the crush sleeve.

The knob is not supposed to be installed all the way down. That raised area is for the leather boot on the later Carreras. The top of the boot fits between that raised area and the knob.

Great, thanks for the info. Now that you mention it, I remember the leather boot being held on by a thick rubber band around that raised ridge. I'll leave the knob where it is.

Kidasters is correct about the new shift knob being held on with a nut from '87-'89.
