Synthetic oil won't help you one bit if you OVERHEAT YOUR ENGINE! It protects to a higher temp than conventional oil, but does nothing to stop the warping of aluminum or the over-expansion/contraction of other metals. These things will occur at a temperature well below the point where S.O. breaks down. So don't think that it's alright to drive your car at those temps because you're lubricated. Track event? I wouldn't even drive it till you get it fixed.

I think Steve (SRT356/911) has a good suggestion. Check to see that the motor thermostat is operating properly. You should be able to tell if the external thermostat is operating by the temp. of the external fender cooler. If the fender cooler's cold, the thermo. isn't opening. But if the internal motor thermo. is not opening, the external cooler would not see hot oil either. At least that's how I understand the oil circulation procedure.

I recall reading about a fella's external thermo. not operating properly and his temps. were higher than normal, but they weren't pegging the gauge. His car was a 3.6 conversion, not a turbo (which runs hotter). Point of reference nonetheless.

Some people have the misperception that synth. oil will protect against overheating. It will in the case of oil film strength at high temps, but not against heat expansion; only add'l clearance helps and this doesn't normally happen unless the thermal expansion rubs off some aluminum from the pistons.

I think S.O. should be mandatory on turbo engines as the turbo gets really hot, especially after shut down.

Okay, as some of you have suggested, I am not going to drive it untill I get the external oil cooler. The thermostat is indeed opening. The cooler pipes get hot. Whether it is opening in time is another matter. I just had the alternator replaced and it was found that one of the two fins on the "air director" was busted off, that was replaced too. I will most likely go with the Mocal cooler, and probably replace the stock thermostat at the same time. I take back what I said about the mechanic taking out the cooler before I bought the car. The horns are still in the front fender. So if there had been a cooler there, the horns wouldn't be. At least thats what I understand. Thank you all for your help. And there are problems stemming from the heat, I am now leaking a substantial amount of oil from the turbo return oil line. I just hope I haven't shortened the life of my engine by a drastic amount.

No, don't take back what you've said about your mechanic. I'll be glad to back you up.

I thought the horns are on the driver side, and the oil cooler is on the passenger side? Are turbos that different?

I have seen thermostats put in backward so that it opens, hot oil runs out and then closes. Basically, the loop does not stay open to cool anything and the temp rises.
Run your engine and feel all of the lines and assure yourself that the loops are opening and staying open and taht you have full flow of the oil.

Many people have given you good suggestions here, but the bottom line is that unless you are fully competent to trouble-shoot your own cooling system, you need a GOOD Porsche-specific wrench who understands these cars and systems and posesses factory workshop manuals and spec-books, which tell the exact temp that therms work, etc...

I'm a big DIY guy, but when I need help I bite the bullet and open wallet. Lots cheaper than a motor. Good luck.

My horns are in front of the fender cooler. Check out one of Chuck Moreland/Clark Griswald's tech. articles on making an oil cooler scoop I believe? He shortened the horn trumpet to allow more airflow to the cooler. I know his and my cars are Carreras, but I don't think the horns would be mounted differently on a 930.
