Backdating an SC to SSI - Interferes with Omega Spring
1983 911SC with newly installed SSIs. The omega spring wouldn't clear the exhaust so we did a search of the forum and found nothing about this.
We mounted the spring to the rear because that seems to interfere less. We dimpled the HE shell, seemingly as far as possible where the omega spring interferes but it still hits before the clutch is fully depressed. Have others experienced this and what have you done to resolve the problem? Is this something we have to live with? Will it eventually wear a hole in the shell or cause an exhaust leak if we leave it as is? |
There is something in Waynes book about this, and yes, others have experienced this. I'm about to install SSI's on my car and I swear I read something about this on PP somewhere. I

I took the spring assy. and bracket completely off and used a throw out lever from an earlier 915. That spring is a real pain in the butt, I got tired off fighting it.

I just pounded the lip on the ssi flat at this spot and let the omega spring rest against the exchanger. two years.. no issues..

But it looks like, if we shorten the cable a bit more (as you show it) it will start from a spot that doesn't interfere. My question in that regard though, is - is the omega spring still helping out once your clutch is depressed? |
the spring returns the long arm to rest at the stop tab above it. you can't adjust the cable right unless the long arm is against it's stop. sometimes the stop tab has broken off and the arm goes too far back.

The clutch feels over-center in roughly the right position as it is right now, but in order to move the arm further forward we have to shorten the adjustment at the pedal some more. A new cable was just installed with the clevis positioned as it was on the old cable. Edit: I guess it did have a stop at one time. The broken screw ends are pretty well crusted over. |
If it helps... what I noticed is that if you separated the spring from the exchanger with a big flathead screwdriver it stays there for sometime. So I tend to think no issues will arise and it's possible to make it stop right before it hits the exchanger....

It looks like we got it!
Thank you for all the helpful replies. Shortening the cable as much as possible at the pedal end allowed us to position the arm such that the spring can be installed on the front side. It does not touch at any time now. :) |
