Question Fuel injector cleaners - do they work?

I have never been a believer in fuel additives but seem to have a problem with the mfi in my '73 E, an intermittent misfire around 3000 rpm. I realize that I will probably have to get the pump and injectors rebuilt at some point. I have gone through all of the points, rotors, plugs, wires, etc. and still have the problem (although it runs really well now when the misfire is not there). Has anyone ever had any luck with injector cleaners? If so, which ones?

The consensus of this group, including me, is that using Techron on a regular basis keeps the injectors clean. As a former owner of a 72 E with MFI I suggest you do some searches for threads regarding the MFI as well as the Pelican tech articles to get ideas about curing the misfire. From what you describe you are no where close to needing a rebuild on your MFI.

Techron is a very good fuel additive...recommended by Porsche I believe.

I have been using Swepco 503 Fuel Improver in my two 911's for about 15 years with excellent results. Just wanted to offer an alternative. Here's the link to Swepco's info page on their fuel additive:

I am really not into additives for oil or gas, but a bottle of techron made a noticeable difference in my 2.4MFI. Just make sure to change the oil afterwards.
My much newer Toyota (1990) always runs just fine with the additive package found in major brand gasolines. But then I drive many, many more miles in it, and fill it up with fresh gas every week or two...

I understand that if you use Techron it may contaminate the oil and it should be changed. I do this.

However, what about using Chevron gas with Techron? Is the Techroin found in the gas so little that oil contamination does not occur?

Buy a bottle of techron. Pour into tank that has only 5 gallons of gas. Run car until almost empty. Fill tank up, drive till empty and change oil. My car ran better after i did this. Will run a little funny with that much techron in it. I also did this in my saab and that car ran great afterwards.

I tried redline before my last trip in the car after a recommendation from my wrench. Gas milage is up a little, runs about the same otherwise.

racemore -- have you searched the archives for threads on this topic? i had the same problem (hesitation at 3K RPM) and solved it by following the "check, measure & adjust" guidelines for MFI.

if you read MY thread, you'll see every step i followed along the way, and what finally fixed the problem.
