Checking '68 911 Thermostat
 

Hello all,
I'm trying to determine if my thermostat is still OK in my '68 911S. I only have the internal one since there's only the engine mounted cooler. The car has usually run around 80*C but last year started only getting to around 60 or 70. I just checked the thermostat in water and it starts to open @ 60*C and is wide open @75*C. Is this typical? Is there any adjustment available? The only info I can find is that at 80*C they should open. Is that wide open or just starting to put oil to the cooler?
Any help/extra info would be greatly appreciated.

75X1.8+32=167F. sounds about right. (full open) yes it's a gradual opening of the thermostat. And that's where the oil goes to the cooler, when it's the hottest. What's the outside air temp around Ontario?

Thanks for the input. The average air temp. for the time I drive the car can go from 50*F to 95*F. Last year was well below normal with only a few days above 85*F. I guess it's possible that the cooler is just very efficient (I did clean the engines thoroughly last year) but that kind of goes against everything I've ever read about these engines.

My 3.0 has an engine and a front oil cooler, only a few times has the front cooler thermostat opened up, only a few days, and the engine temp is always around 180F. Just another benefit of living in the great north!!

170-180F is about normal.
