oil temperature gauge failure

My oil temperature gage appears to have failed. It no longer moves off of the "cold" position. Is their a way to troubleshoot the gage. I have checked the wiring using an axillary gage and it shows the wiring to be OK . If the gage is failed can you just purchase the insert to fit into the housing?
Thanks
chuck

Have you shorted the sender wire to the block (with ignition on) and observed the gauge?

I tried this and got no response from my in dash gage. I can get my console mounted VDO gage to read temperature, but it appears to be about 30 deg High, as measured by using an infared heat gun.

Too many questions. What/where sender are you using for the VDO? Where are you pointing the IR thermometer? If you can determine the gauge is DOA, then just buy another.

Hunter,
I am using the original Porsche 911 sender for the VDO, which indicates temperature , however it reads high. I have since writing the original post, purchased a replacement combo gage identical to what comes with the 911 sc, installed it, and it reacts the same way. NO Temperature indication. I don't know what the odds are for having two identical gages react the same way, but they do. The sender obviously works, as it does indicate temperature to the auxilary gage. Is there anyone who can tell me how to trouble shoot the Porsche combo console gage? Thanks
Chuck
