Backdate question...
 

I'm considering a backdate on my SC. I tried to search, but I must have used the wrong criteria to answer my question.

The question concerns LWB vs SWB parts.

1) Is an early SWB car a suitable donor (hood/fenders etc.) for an SC to perform a backdate?

I see nice early SWB parts (usually 912's) pop up all the time at reasonable prices, although I really don't expect that trend to last too many more years and I'd like to stash a set away for a future build.

You will want LWB parts for your backdate. 911 or 912 model years 69-73. Ideally, if you have black trim on your SC you would want the 73 style trim on your backdate. This means black horn grills and black rim on the TS lenses.

The LWB parts are only necessary for the rear quarters (fenders), I believe.

Everything else should be OK w/ SWB parts.

Front fenders on SWB cars do not have a flare, the turn signal/horn grille openings are different and require SWB turn signal units (very expensive in decent condition and do not have separate lenses) and SWB grilles which are longer than LWB (and ditto on the expense.) SWB bumpers mount differently than LWB also. Hoods and decks are relatively the same. Most everything else is interchangeable, save rear suspension and rear quarters (previously mentioned) which you probably wouldn't swap out anyway.

Steel is expensive and most likely rusty.....I went with f/g and got everyhting from TRE.

I now know what to look for. LWB front fenders & TS, and a SWB or LWB hood or deck and rear bumper & TS.

I seem to "lucky" finding decent priced SWB parts (mostly 912's) here in the Pacific NW, while LWB '69 - '73 911's are few and far between.

I feel a little sorry for all the early 912's that are being parted, and can't help but believe that someday they will command a bit more respect (and decent $$). I really don't see a huge difference between an early 912 and a late 356. The 356 has a more classic look & the interior is very charming, but the price difference is crazy between the two!

The parts that are not easy to find are the two front fenders and the front turn signal boxes. Most people go with 'glass. I finally tracked down a set of metal fenders but it was not easy nor cheap.

Will have my car back on the road in the next two weeks but still have to fix and find all the stuff for the front lights and turn signals. Its the little stuff that takes a while.

Use your stock SC fenders and weld in or fiberglass in the early style light/horn grill boxes. I have seen both metal and fiberglass boxes. This will save you tons of time fitting the fenders. Give TRE a call to get all the information you need about back dating.

A regular rear bumper will not work on your SC due to the flares. You can have them cut and welded up to match the flares. I used fiberglass bumpers as they were easier to make work.
