82 SC timing question
 
While tinkering this weekend, I was trying to check my advance mechanism on distributer. I suspect that I am not getting full-advance. I have it set at 7deg. BTDC w/o vac.,(Bentley says 5deg. +/-2), and also says I should have 21deg. +/-3 BTDC w/o vac. It doesn't tell how much total advance w/vac. I have read 34deg. on this board. Is this right? Does anyone know specs for testing vac. unit,(lbs. of vac for full advance, lbs. or inches that are supposed to come out of manifold @RPM, etc.)? Would all of this info be on factory manual CD's?

Also, I thought that the mech. advance felt sticky after 20 yrs., so I squirted some WD-40 type lube in it and it feels free-er. Was this a wrong thing to do? Sorry for the long questions, Any expert advice appreciated. Thanks. :)

WD40 is good to dry out the cap too. I put a few drops of machine oil on the little sponge pad under the rotor too.

WD-40 will gum in time and make it sticker. My Master (to use Roland's terminology) made me throw it away - Kroil, penetrating oil and light machine oil has replaced it. I'd take the distributor apart, clean it and lubricate it with light oil or engine oil, except fort he lobes - there one should use Bosch distributor grease sparingly. Early_S_Man will likely have the vacuum and other specs.:D JIM

Thanks for the replies. Jim you've got me scared now- at least it wasn't actual WD-40, but a better substitute, IMO. Bill, I don't know if you got yours figured since other thread, but I do know that you should DEFINITELY be able to see plate,(not rotor), move when vac is applied to either port,(adv. or ret.), of vac unit. If not you need a new unit and car will run a LOT better. Just got my little factory spec book today, will read it tonight and post any info found.

No, I still don't have this figured out. I was looking for rotor movement with vacuum, but I'll try it again and see if I see any movement of the plate. I really should pull the dizzy and take it apart, but I'm a little nervous about getting it put back together correctly.
