2.2E Engine upgrade question.
My 71 E is nearly ready to leave the body shop after a bare metal restoration and we have currently started a rebuild on the 2.2E #s matching engine with MFI.
What I can gather from what I have read is that a great upgrade is to over bore the original cylinders to 85 and replace with Forged Pistons from JE. Another necessary upgrade is the front mounted oil cooler. For more Power the general consensus is to to use 2.4 or 2.7 crank with E pistons and E cams and it will in turn give me a 2.4 and a compression ratio of 10.1. I have a 2.7 crank sitting in my garage collecting dust so this presents a welcome opportunity. I have also read there is no need to twin-plug the engine. (See quote below) I really don't want to twin plug as I wish to maintain the factory look of the engine bay. "This is the best upgrade for the 2.2 engines as it essentially turns them into a 2.4l displacement. The 2.4 and 2.7 share the same crank, so these are easy to find in junk 2.7 motors. Using the shorter stroke 2.2 pistons means that the compression ratio is elevated to about 10:1. This engine runs fine on pump gas without twin-plugging." The math works like this... 85 x 85 x 70.4 x 3.1416 / 4 x 6 / 1000 = 2,396 cc Can anyone tell me if I must find a set of 2.4 rods or will my 2.2e rods work fine? I'm hoping for the later. I'm also planning on having the heads ported and polished to 34 or 36mm... (Or? Help again please.) Below are a couple pics of the car after blasting and the oh so nice door gaps... :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1270750376.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1270750446.jpg Thanks in advance... This site is an excellent resource so kudos to Wayne and all the people at and on Pelican. |
2,4 rods and 2,2 are not interchangeable due to different bearing widths.
Nice math, looks familiar! Porting the heads is pretty expensive and works well for high-rpm power. For around town use and E cams I would stick with the stock ports. |
Hi John, Yes I have read allot of your post and the equation was a great find. So I can save porting the heads and buy 2.4 rods. Cheers, Adam
