Emergency Brake shoe Thickness / Cracks
Hi All,
I'm finally getting around to replacing Rotors/ pads/ Brake lines/ Front Wheel bearing and paint Calipers/ Re-finish fuchs/ buying new Dunlop Direzza's. Purchase the car 1.5 years ago with 74K on it and drove it home from CO to CA over the next 22 hours. Been spending time doing minor maintenance and replacing bushings, etc. I pulled the rear rotors tonight and there was no lip on the drum section, Rotors are .025 below minimum thickness. The e-brake shoes have ~0.140 thousands of shoe material. But there are obvious cracks in the shoe material all the way across the shoe in at least three places. All shoes have 3 or more cracks. So What is the new thickness of the e-brake shoe material. I'm thinking its from the PO driving with the e-brake slightly on and got them hot. The Brake lever was tight at 4 clicks or so but the cable adjusters had more than 1" of thread showing befofe the lock nuts. Do I need to worry about the cracks? Do I need to replace them? Comments? My option codes show I have sport shocks but they are Boge... Could that be correct? Blade 1989 Carrera Targa - Red w/ Black interior (probably the most common) 81K miles and the front rotors are much worse.

4mm is the thickness of the shoes new. Found in Bentely manual, should have looked there first. 4mm is ~.158 Thousands and mine are at .145 so they are not worn enough to worry about. I think the cracks will be OK if it's only used as a parking brake.

Your E brake being tight at 4 clicks is good,i wouldn't worry about the emergency brake pads as they seem to be good for many more years.
It's only when you run out of adjustment that you will be concerned ! Phil
