Oil Return Tubes

Lindemans is proud:

I had a terribly leaking oil return tube, of course the one most difficult to get to behind the heat exchanger (front-left).
But tips & hints on this forum to use hose clamps is the trick without having to remove the heat exchanger. My biggest nightmare was having to remove the HE and snap a couple of rusty brittle studs here. I know now for sure: no need to remove the HE and done within the hour !

As per many posts crush and pull the old one. Tricky step because it's a point of no return.
It was clear that rust on the tube had worked its way around the o-ring, which caused it to start leaking.

The 2-piece replacement can slide in and out but don't be fooled, sliding requires a lot of force. Lube all o-rings with silicone lube. Push one half entirely into the other half; then install hoseclamps on either side.

With a bit of wiggling, you can get the new one past the heat exchanger and in position. I first pushed the thinner tube in position, this one goes into the camhousing. Using a srewdriver as a lever against the hose clamp around the oil tube, it plopped in easily.

To extend the 2-piece tube, you need force. I again used the srewdriver to keep the cam-housing side in position, while I used a crowfoot to lever the hose clamp on the other side to extend the tube, and finally guide it into the engine case.
The heat exchager is a good pivot point for the lever.

I then tapped the circlip in position with a srewdriver after checking it didn't leak anymore.

Done and dry !

A proud moment indeed. Did the same fix a few weeks back with help from KILRWAIL (thanks again Peter!), and I have the same mangled old return tube that I plan to hang onto as a momento of my first real fix on the 911.

My experience wasn't quite so difficult, since in my case, the leaker was on the right side and was relatively easy to get to. Still, it's quite rewarding to no longer need that piece of cardboard under the car when I park it.

Good stuff.

Yes, one of my favorite beer. During a NATO stop over, we were invited to tour the facility. Of course after the tour we sample the stuff, we sample the stuff and sample the stuff.

Don't remember leaving the place but remember my buddy waking me up the next morning to go on a organized tour that I had previously sign-up for... it was a long day but those were the good old days.

I know the place, been there a couple of times, sampling in the basement bar; it's a 15 minutes away from where I'm typing this.

Friend of mine works for the company, until recently they had beer in the company vending machines after 3 pm (in Belgium company restaurants still have it at lunch by default by the way).

I remember reading about it in paper. Didn't the drivers stage some king of retaliation like a slow down or strike treath?

Like we used to say in the Navy, No Life Like It

The oil return tubes I have in mind haven't been made yet. They would have internal threads so you could just put them in place and unscrew the 2 ends against each other to seat the o-rings. This could be a machined part or the threads could be roll formed, either way the tooling and labor to make such a part could be expensive driving the price beyond what most DIY guys would pay.
