SSI upgard Question
Fellow Pelicans-
I have a question in regard to heat exchanger removal. I am aware of the caution needed when removing the bolts due rust/coresion and have been instructed to use a torch and get the bolts red hot. on my 911 there is one bolt and one allen screw. Was this the normal factory set up? Your thoughts and advice are welcome. thanks for your time. Regards- JS ![]() |

Yes, that is normal. The allen bolt is to use an allen key through the hole in the heat exchangers, since a socket wrench would be too thick to go through the hole.

Hello,
The allen is a nut, I got a long 8MM on eBay for about $8.00 in 3/8 drive. The rest is history, be careful with the nuts, and it will all go like buttah. I think the SSIs are the single best engine mod to date, be prepared for a new car, and better power! eric

Ive done this swap a few times now, don't know why, but i have better luck using no heat. Twice ive started nut removal with heat and snap..Now I soak them in Kroil, take a punch and give them all wacks with a hammer for a few days. Hav'nt broken one since, and ive done some rusty onesl Get the best 8mm 3/8 drive allen socket you can find, (DO NOT USE Harbor Fright allens) I have a short 13mm box wrech bent into an S for the hard one, 1/4 inch drive ratchet with 13mm socket and swivel for the rest.
