convert dash clock to desk clock?
 

I removed the clock from my 82 Targa and was wondering if any of you electric-minded folks had a cheap/simple way to power it while it was sitting on a desk?

A 12vdc "wall wart" should do it. 500ma ~ 1a should be fine...

I had the same thought. I think the easy way would be to buy a battery powered clock kit and put the Porsche face on it.

What could be easier than walking over to your kids XBox, cutting the power supply and splicing it to the +/- leads of the clock?

I'm sure at some point the clock was updated, but the old ones were mechanical with a little rewinding mechanism that winds the clock every minute or so.

A 9V battery will wind it, but I don't know how long it will last.

I had my clock out and sitting in the kitchen for a few days to adjust the speed, a 9V kept it running fine.

I did exactly that. Spare 12v power supply that I had laying around. I got a new/used clock for the car, then had the original fixed.
So.... desk clock now.
I'll post a pic when I get home.

The early clocks use a spring mechanism that winds itself from a solenoid about every 3-5 minutes or so. I would think a 12V mini battery from Radio Shack (the kind used in car remotes) would last for months, if not years. Must easier to go cordless in my opinion. The hard part is making it look "right" on your desk...

I thought it would be silent,,, but it's not. It ticks like a wall clock. Maybe the gears are worn out? I don't know.

I was going to finish the wood , with stain, etc. but haven't gotten around to that yet.

I have a clock out of a 964 that I would like to convert to a desk clock.

Does anybody know where I can find the wiring connections for this thing?

I started this Ducati instrument cluster desk clock using a Radio Shack power source in 1993 and it has not missed a beat.

A couple of years ago I made this one. A bit more complex, I used the speedo for the hours hand, the rev-counter for the minutes hand. It takes some habit to learn to "read" it though...

What type of mechanism drives them?
When they get to the end do they swing back to the start? >>> 6.45?

Sorry, I got it wrong. The hour hand is in the revcounter.
Anyway, I gutted the gauges and used 2 RC servos to drive the hands. That's why they travel only the upper half. The electronics to drive them were custom made by me.

Time is 9.59 or so... about to turn 10

every time I look at that clock it makes me want to go for a drive :-)

Correcto! It's a hot rodded 911 table clock. SC clock, 993 fan, 993 vinyl behind the fan holes, modern silver whel paint.

Note the time. ;)
