Going to Germany soon -- What should I pick up?
I'm making another pilgrimage to Germany over the X-mas holidays. Yes, I tried to arrange a factory tour in Zuffenhausen, but they will be closed the entire time I'm there. So the best I can hope for is to see the museum, which I'm told will be open. I've been to Germany many times, but not since I became a Porsche owner. Is there anything there, which I can't get here for my P-car?

A currywurst, some Kummerling (bitters) and a kilo or so of dark Belgium chocolate!

Gawd I forget the exact lyrics...remember the Beatles song, "Back in the USSR"? Chuck Berry wrote an answer...the lyric went something like: "Anything you want is right here in the USA." I've had people living in Germany ask me if I can find some Porsche bits. The reason is Germany's tough laws...it's very difficult to legally keep an older car on the road over there. This results in parts becoming "unobtainable" rather quickly. Wayne probably has better and MORE parts for older 911's than you can buy in Stuttgart.

Sorry, got carried away. Bamberg is about an hour by train away and has a specialty beer that is smoked. Takes a little getting used to. The city is great, never damaged very much during WWII with lots of original buildings. The Bosch fuel injection plant is there as well.

There was a post similar to this a few months ago. Most people had suggestions concerning beer, women and street signs. They all sound like good ideas to me.

Just got back from Germany, involved with the humanitarian missions over Afghanistan. Drank entirely too much Hef and had more than my fill of J-snitzel. Must of gained 15 lbs. Bring back gummy bears (haribo goldbaren) and kinder eggs (uberraschung). The holidays are coming up after all. Oh that's right, you were interested in P-car things. Most things are cheaper here at home. Check out the pre-owned porsches at the large lot up the street from the museum, 2-floors, pretty cool. A friend of mine grabbed handfuls of the brochures from the showroom to sell on ebay. Folks will pay for that stuff. Gutentag.

OK... If you want to know about Tim's posting, it says: drive to Bamburg and drink a glass of beer. Personally I prefer a weizenbier but thats me...
That said, if anyone really likes German food (and you are nuts if you do not) then please go to: WWW.GERMANDELI.COM No, before you ask, I am not connected in any way with the deli, just have used them for years for very good German foods and such here in America. Inga who runs the place is a jewel and takes special requests for things. There are a lot of items that she carries that are not on the website that she carries for special holidays, like Marzipan and Chocolate for Christmas... Enjoy! JA

Don't forget to get plenty of delicious Braunschweiger. Mmmmm...spreadable meat!
Don't ask whats in it...just spread it on a cracker and enjoy. Best washed down with a nice Pilsner. Have a great trip!

That's pretty funny Nick! Braunsweiger tastes great for sure.
Joe, thanks for the link. I said it before on this board and I say it again: "Nothing beats bratwurst, sauerkraut and potatoes, and a Becks." Nice and easy to fix for bachelor Bob. Good day all as I go back to check out that germandeli link some more! ---------------------------- Bob Sauerteig Atlanta, GA '87 Carrera Coupe Last edited by VenezianBlau 87; 12-05-2001 at 05:09 AM.. |

Thanks guys. My German is almost as good as my English and I've been there many times -- just not since I've had my Porsche. I know all about the good beer and food, off-the-beaten-path small towns, etc. Now, that pre-owned lot near the factory is something I did not know about and will certainly check out. I was just wondering about obscure parts or accessories for my car.

If you're used to reading german you might want to bring back some german car magazines. There are many good ones including Auto Motor & Sport, Sport & Tuning, Auto Katalog etc. |

I have a '81 E21 in the UK. There's many specialists that sell Euro bumpers in the UK. Let me know if you need more info. You'd get it sent over no problem. |

I didn't want to drag BMW's into this, but I have one of those too and a good friend who works there in Muenchen. So I'll probably be heading that way as well. I don't want to spend another dime on my Bimmer though. Car mags are a good idea.

Purchase local club badges for your grille. Also find one of the "You Are Leaving the American Sector" T-shirts that have this text in German, English, and Russian. Very cool.
