It's getting there.

Days away.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to be around for the install today. I actually really only got to swing by on my way into work tonight and snap this pick. Half shafts still aren't on and I think there is an oil return that needs to be replaced. I think there is still a day or so before we can fire it up.

Did I miss it or did no one suggest getting the Alusils recoated with Nikasil? US Chrome does this for a fairly reasonable price.

mickey356 05-17-2010 05:28 PM

No Kenikh, Im pretty sure it was brought up in here somewhere. I went with a set of redone Alusils. I have my old ones and was considering having them redone and selling them or holding on to them for possible future use, if for some reason the ones I put in don't work out.
I'll look into US Chrome, thanks.

SSI's are purdy...

It had to be said.

I swear I was as excited driving to my buddies shop today as I was the day I went to pick it up! The engine is in and the break in is started. Just so I cover my bases correctly (I suppose this thread should actually be in Engine Rebuilding but its here so I'll go ahead) -

Run 20 mins at 200 rpm, change oil - done
Drive 3-5 miles, check for leaks and check oil level - done
Drive 8-10 miles, check again - done

Now I have to drive it another 10-20 miles and let it sit over night, change the oil and filter.
Then warm it up, check timing (adjust if needed) drive it 500 miles, change oil and adjust valves, check head stuf nuts.
Then drive it another 1000 miles and change oil, adjust valves again and I'm broken in, yes?

I can't get over the difference! The car is sooooo much quicker! I don't know if it's the rebuild, the SSI's and M&K, or what, but it's a whole new car. The exhaist is frickin awesome!! It sounds soooooo good, nice and throaty.

Here's the finished product with heater backdate and AC delete.

Tomorrow I'll wash it and post proper intro pics of the "first stage" of my 83SC.
Thanks sooooo much to everyone for their help, knowledge and generosity. I know it's been said many times by many people here, but I don't know what I'd do with out this forum.

"Redone" Alusils? Most folks believe Alusils cannot be reused, though I re-ringed mine with no trouble. What did you do?

mickey356 05-19-2010 03:23 PM

Superman,
"redone" is probably the wrong term, actually just cleaned up "used" alusils (with matching set of cleaned up CIS pistons) that were still in spec is what was used in my top emd, with a new set of Goetze rings. So I guess you could say I did what you did, except I didn't use the set in my car, I bought a cleaned up matching set from Tom Butler. I'm thinking about sending my old ones out to be "redone" (or nikasil plated) and then hold on to them for sometime down the road if needed.
As far as most folks believing alusils cant be resued, as I'm sure you know, it's been widely debated on this forum, I chose to give it a shot. So far so good, but time will tell if I made the right move. That said, with folks like you and others, I think they can be resued if they're in good shape and cleaned properly etc.... I'm not too worried about it, maybe I'm naive, we'll see.

Well, the fun had to end sometime. :(
I went out for another break in run tonight and noticed the Alt light was on (dim and would brighten slightly with higher rpm). Got back to work and hopped on PP to research Alt Light. Saw it maybe be loose belt, volt reg, or alt, so I figured I'd go back to my buddies garage in the morning (have to change oill and filter again anyway) and we diagnose it then. On my way home tonight (4 mile drive)- car started fine, and I stopped at the 7-11 left it running, came out and noticed as I was driving my tach stopped, then I noticed the dash lights were very dim as well as the headlights. At this point I'd past my buddies shop so I decided it best to turn around and leave it there for the night. When I pushed in the clutch and slowed to turn around it died (of course cuz the Alt was going) but since I was on a downhill I put it in 2nd and bumped it, HUGE backfire and stall again and wouldn't bump again. There is still juice in the battery though. Anyway, it's parked in a lot for the night and I'll get it back to the shop in the morning.
What am I looking at, new alternator? Bad wiring? Loose belt? What would make it die yet still have batery juice? It wouldn't even crank after it stalled. I know NOTHING about auto electrical, not that I know much about cars period. I did replace the voltage reg last summer right after I bought it because i was have some bouncy tach, dying issues. After I replace the vr it was fine. While the engine was being worked on I did take the alternator out to clean up the fan and housing, could I have screwed something up when I put it back together? I took a photo and put the wires back where they were in the photo when I reassembled the fan. I don't know why the car would have run OK for 50 miles in the first place if the alt wasn't wired properly in the first place.

let your buddy sort it out, probably a ground or minor issue.

New Alternator. Put it in this afternoon and all is well again. Tested the connections and did a bench test which showed it come up short, oh well, whats another couple hundred on an already enormus bill. :)

Hope you put in an updated one to eliminate the voltage regulator!
