Key cutting
I only had one key for my car, and bought a new blank. Where can I have the key cut? Do I have to go to the dealership, or can I get the key cut at a place like Ace hardware?
Thanks |
Got mine done at a key shop, but I've had them done at ACE, too.

Go to a pro locksmith.

I have a lock smith that I have gone to previously to re-key locks. I will have him cut the new one.
Thanks |
I also went to a lock smith, it was a couple of bucks more then Ace or Home Depot but well worth it.

Ace did mine, fours years of perfect use.....it's just a key. A pro at a private outfit ain't a bad idea if it eases your mind, only more money I imagine. Skip a latte.

I got mine done at a key/lock/security store. They didn't cost more than about three bucks each and the guy came out to spray some lube in my locks for free. They worked so much better after that, I bought a can for myself.

My dealership will cut keys for free, as long as they are Genuine Porsche key blanks. So I buy blanks from Pelican and have the dealership cut them.

I tried to have the key cut today at a locksmith, and they would not guarantee the key if it was not on one of their blanks. So of course, when I got it home it didn't work.
I also tried taking the already cut key to my local Porsche dealer, Fred Lavery, to see if they would be able to fix the cut. Thankfully, the key was under cut. The service department person took the key and was able to fix it, so now it does work. Woo Hoo. And they didn't charge me for fixing the key cut Graham, thanks for the suggestion to go to the dealer. I would not have thought about going there to have a key cut. The service person actually was very helpful and got it done pretty quick too. |
When I bought the 84, I received one well-worn ignition key. Rather than have a second cut from that, I went another route and had the dealership cut a new blank off the VIN information.
Don't remember it being all that expensive...just thought it was well worth the "investment" |
i found a place locally that had blanks for my 83. they cost me under $3 each with cutting. i had 3 made just in case.
