I want to thank those of you who helped provide tips on replacing my brake lines,and front rotors on my 83SC. It all started when I was getting some sticking in my front calipers, which is why I decided to start simple and replace the lines first and replace brake fluid with ATE Super Blue. Well, during the brake line replacement part of the job I had snapped off a bleed nipple on a rear caliper and in attempting to remove it with an easy out, I broke that off also. I ended up buying a new rear caliper. Oh well! Upon further review I noticed that the front brake pads and rotors were toast so I had to replace them. My dust caps were a little stubborn but with a gentle tapping with a hammer while turning the hub, they starting coming out. The rotors went in with no problems. I installed new Mintex pads on the front. Following the job I bled the brakes using my Motive pressure bleader. That thing works great. Just pumped it up to 15 lbs and went around the wheels twice to get the air out. Topped off the reservoir, got my 7 yr old assistant to pump the brake peddle and went around the wheels twice again. I'm still in the wearing in phase, but so far the brakes work great, firm peddle and no more caliper sticking!
Now all I have to do is find a machine shop to drill out that old rear caliper bleed nipple port and I can practice rebuilding a caliper. If that works I may have a rebuilt caliper for sale. I want to thank all of the contributors to my excercise including but not limited to Warren ( Mr. Metric flare wrench), Superman, Leland, Kurt B, etc. I was a little apprehensive at first, but once I got into the job, it was pretty easy. The only problem was that bloody bleed nipple! It sure was great to get that P-Car back on the road. My next undertaking will be replacing the tranny fluid with Swepco. I've seen plenty of posts on the subject and am looking forward to it. Thanks again. Eric 83SC |
