custom shifter

Hi guys,
Much more of a lurker than a poster but I do have a quick question. I have a 915 going in a kit car and will be hooking up the shifter soon. A lot of people have said,"You have to use the stock shifter or an aftermarket Wevo etc..." Well, neither are in my budget (i.e. part-time teacher's salary ) but I do have a Jamar dune buggy shifter that I ripped the reverse lockout out of. I measured the throw of the shifter and the amount of movement in the shift rod and I'll have plenty of movement with a slight mod to the box for 5th. (Dimple the box out .125"). Why would I need the actual shifter if everything else will line up? I plan on putting a gate over the top so it goes into the gear I want. Don't need to slam 3rd when wanting 5th! I'm trying to keep it all simple. The chassis is a tube frame so space isn't a problem. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Jeff

Sounds doable since the shifter is merely a lever (all detents in the gearbox). However, use a shifter that defines the gear position (i.e. spring-loaded feature). You will realize this when you attempt that first downshift from 5th to 4nd and instead select 2nd. Engine goes "ouch".

Pre-owned 915 shift housing assemblies can be found for a reasonable price. You'll need the shift tube and coupler too, then modify the length of the shift tube to suit your kit car dimensions.

That's why I'm putting a gated shifter plate over the lever so it goes where it is supposed to.
Attached is a pic of where the 915 sits right now.
Reasonable price varies from person to person. I know a few weekend racers who think $1,000 is pocket change. To me, pocket change is anything under a dollar...

Where are you in IL? I'm updating my 73 915 shifter to an 86, and driving from MA to MN next week, stopping in Chicago on the 25th-26th. If you can meet me there, I can give it to you then. do you need the bar and coupler too? can bring those as well. LMK.

Thanks! Been working on it for about 3 years now. I have around 1,000 hours in AutoCAD alone designing the chassis and suspension. The car is actually a Manta Montage and was a basketcase when I got it. It was on a VW chassis but about all that is left of that is the front floor pans, rear tranny tunnel (VIN #s), rear trailing arms and a custom rear torsion section. I designed my own a-arm front suspension, 24" lower a-arms! The rear torsion was cut off and an aftermarket unit was cut in half, sectioned, spread 9" and raised 2". The 915 is being hooked up to a 2006 Subaru EJ25 engine with only 600 miles on it! I'll be running dual exhaust from a Vette and wiring from Outfront Motors.
The tires are 265/50/15 on 10" front and 295/50/15 on 12" rears. The body still needs A LOT of work and customizing, but I'll be up to my neck in welding slag and fiberglass this summer!
I should set up a photobucket so everyone can see the stuff I'm doing.
Gotta go out a plant a new money tree. The last one died and was used for compost...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1271388748.jpg
