production statistics

A friend of mine who owns an exotic car "boutique" in West Vancouver Canada, has acquired a very special car, and is wondering where on the net he can find production data.

The car in question is a turbo look 964 body Carrera 2 (1992 model I believe). It's low miles, grey in colour. He claims that only 577 964 were brought into north america in 1992, but he has no numbers that distinguish between cabs, coupes and targas, much less turbo bodies vs normal bodies. The 577 number seems low to me, but that's what he has found out so far.

Anyway... does anyone know of a web site, or other source of info he can access to break down the models for a given year?

Thanks

Oh...I forgot to mention that the car is a cabriolet. He's asking $60,000 Canadian, which works out to less that $40K for anyone who is interested.

Pick up the Porsche 911 Red book. It retails for 12.95. It has many of the answers people normally look for such as VIN number, options and production numbers. At a glance the car you are referring to was known as the "American Roadster" It is a turbo Look Cabriolet with an NA 3.6L engine. There should be a script on the back lid. This was new for the Aug 91 to July 92 production years.

If it's a cab, and the turbo look option came from the factory (not after market flares), than the car is definitely an "America Roadster" model. The script on the rear decklid should read as such. For that year, there were 715 coupes, 211 targas, and 992 cabs brought into N. America. Although only 250 of the cabs were turbo-look "America Roadster" models, so they are fairly rare.

That's great information Eric, thanks - intersting to note that it doesn't say America Roadster on the back....but then again it's a Canadian car. I didn't see the paperwork on the car that proves the flares were factory issue, I am assuming the owner of the car can verify the claim that they were.

It is a nice car though...by the way, where did you dig up these details?

What do you mean, all that info came directly from memory! Just kidding. I got the it from the aforementioned 911 Red Book, and the Porsche 911 Performance Handbook, both essential reading for the 911 nut. If the car is not badged as an "America Roadster", then it might just be a R.O.W (rest of world) gray market car. If it is a gray market car, you can confirm this by checking to see if "ZZZ" are the 4th, 5th, and 6th digit in the VIN number. The stats for the R.O.W. cars for that year are as follows: 4844 coupes, 597 targas, and 2885 cabs. There were R.O.W. turbo look cabs, but I don't have the figure for how many were produced. It is probably much higher than the number of "America Roadsters" though. Also, a quick way to tell if the car is original is by looking at the brakes and wheels. The car should have the factory 17" turbo wheels, and turbo brakes. If not, the car is probably a private conversion, and a lot less desirable.
