915 tranny stuck in two (!) gears

Hello,

I just had a strange thing happening while a mechanic was moving the car in a workshop:
The 915 tranny was stuck in two gears simultaneously.
Felt like reverse and first. With the clutch pressed, the engine was running, but as soon as the clutch engaged, engine would die.
We wiggled the car-no effect.
After removing the bottom plate of the tranny, we managed to "loose" the reverse gear with a large screwdriver after some attempts.
After reassembly and filling up the oil everything was normal again.
This never happened before and I have never heard of it.

Had anyone the same experience?
Anything to worry about?

Of course I will drive the car on my own from now on-even in the workshop...

Jens

not sure on a p-car but I have fixed this a few times on heavy trucks. Someone shifts really hard and springs the shift fork or moves it on the shaft and then goes to another gear and that jams it all up.

Check for loose shift fork that is bolted on the bottom removable plate.

It's not all that uncommon on a 915 with worn shift linkage parts.

remove the reverse light switch and push in on the pin, so it comes out of reverse.

I just had the same issue and Johns suggestion of removing the back-up light switch and pushing in the rod fixed it. I think my problem started with the linkage not being adjusted spot on but I fear a tranny tear down to fix detents is in my future. It's working fine now though.

Put in a new selector on the shifter and you can get it out of the 2 gears. If that doesnt work to get it out of gear, open the inspection plate and select that all gears for being out of gear. set your shifter and you should be able to shift.
The bad guy in this is the swivel on the linkage.

I had this happen a few times, I did managed to get it unstuck with pulling the reverse light but I am not sure exaclty what I did.

After replacing my shifter bushings and before carefull going into reverse it has happened again.
