Help with Pertronix on 74 911
I recently install a Pertronix Ignitor. Originally, Pelican sent me the unit without the wiring schematic for the CD ignition and I wired it according to the diagram that came with it. When it did not work, I got on the internet and got the proper schematic. Now the car won't start at all. I've checked the wiring carefully and it is correct and I've run all the tests on the unit and it tests good. I also installed a new 3 ohm coil. I have both the original Bosch CD unit and an older model Perma-tune. I know how to test the Perma-tune and I think it is bad. It was on the car when I had the wiring bad. I have tried the Bosch unit and it does not work either. I don't know how to test the Bosch unit to see if it's bad. Can anyone tell me where I can get that info? I have an ohm meter/volt meter.
Any advice is appreciated. |
Use the search function You'll be amazed at all the info there. Just my 2 cents, PUT THE POINTS BACK IN. Lot's of Pelicans will chime in and admonish me, but I hate that Pertonix set up I think it's cheap crap, the magnet is hard to line up, the unit is tight in the distributor, you have to grind off the lower portion of the rotor so the collar will fit, wires are pinched, blah blah blah. Good luck, and post a picture of your car.

This is the proper diagram for the 911 with CD ignition.
http://www.pertronix.com/support/tips/pdf/porsche_cd_diagram.pdf It is not easy to find. It is not the same as their normal set up. I am not going to admonish anyone, to each his own. It was hands down one of the cheapest best upgrades I did. |
+1 on a test using the points--very simple to replace points and see if you have spark using a known entity. I had a similar experience tested using the old points. Car started so I went back to diagnose a wiring problem with the Petronix. Once installed, no problems since.

Thanks for help
I did have that wiring diagram from Pertronix and that is how I wired it. I still think my CD unit may be bad. It makes no noise and it's output is just 12V to the coil.
I really appreciate your input and will keep trying. |
I installed a Pertronix in my 1973 4 years ago and love it. I have not had to touch it....PERIOD.....
This is one of the best upgrades I have done to my car.....for the money THE BEST upgrade. Wiring is not difficult. All you have to do is provide +12 volts DV switched to the red wire. The black wire goes to the CD unit. Just remember that you have to provide power to the module. With points you just are grounding the black wire every time the points close. Pertronix does the same, but the electronics need power to operate. Unless you burnt out the module by wiring it backwards I would look somewhere else for the problem. |

I installed a Pertronix during my rebuild on my 74 2.7, I have touched it since.

Installed the Petronix in my 74 2.7 seven years ago..
As others stated, it is definitely one of the best upgrades I've made. |
Same with me
I have also installed this in my 2.7 and have never had to touch it....it works perfect everytime. I installed it back in 2004....
