930 Caliper question

I'm in the process of rebuilding the rear calipers on my 1985 Turbo-Look. It has the 930 (turbo) calipers.

I know that its not convenient to open the standard calipers in two halves unless its absolutely necessary.

Does this apply also to the 930 calipers? It would be much easier to remove the pistons with the caliper opened in halves, but I don' want to end up with a leaking caliper.

Also, does the 20 degree rule apply to the 930 pistons also, or is the necessary angle diffrerent?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

HA i just help do this!

on the first one, we took the caliper apart. fluid goes down that tube, not within the caliper itself. it didnt make it much easier. the rest; we rebuilt them intact.

that 20deg thing got confusing. we set up the pistons so each one contributed to lowering the leading edge. before we started, we noted that all of them were all over the place. we set them so the lower part of each piston "faced" the oncoming rotor. (crap, does this even make sense?)

hopefully JP911 chimes in. his calipers, and he is a wizard with words. hahah.

Max, the 930 calipers have a transfer tube as a cross over vs. thru the body, and the 20 deg. angle does apply

If you think of the disc as a saw blade aproaching the pistons that will help you with the orientation

Vash and Mike, thanks for your help.

Vash: I do understand the part about the lower parts of the pistons facing the oncoming rotors. In fact, that was the position they had when I removed them.

The main problem I'm having is in removing the Scraper Rings (I believe they are the equivalent to Dust Boots in regular calipers), they are really tight. That is why I was thinking on parting the calipers in halves to make the removal of the Scrapers easier.

no. we used a small (almost tiny) punch to dent the scraper rings. go slow, and tap away. the first one we were really careful. gingerly tapping. it took more of a beating than we imagined. once it starts to distort, it gives up quick. they pop right out. we used a tiny steel plate and a c-clamp to squeeze new ones in.
