What is this steering wheel ?
I saw this steering wheel on a 1972 911 car for sale. The owner claims it's a modification and the wheel is from a 911S of the same period.
True? False? Can I get the horn button on my steering wheel? Can I locate the button with a colored crest? ![]() and this is my steering wheel : ![]() |

I don't believe that the early 911/912 horn buttons ever came with colored crests like the one in the picture you took. It's probably a previous owner DIY addition. As far as I know the early steering wheels only came with leather pads embossed with the Porsche crest. If your car is a 69 or later it would not have a wood steering wheel either. If you decide not to keep it I am looking for one for my 67 and would pay a fair price. or trade for the period correct black leather sport wheel with Porsche crest currently on my 67. Just throwing it out there, never can hurt right?
OR, You can easily install a colored crest on your existing horn button just remove and disassemble the horn button you already have and add an enameled crest such as those found on 356 hood handles by affixing it to a piece of leather cut out using the original leather as a template. I would recommend that you keep the original crest embossed leather horn pad if still present since they are scarce. Pelican carries the 356 hood handle crests. You would probably need to break the mounting pins off the back of the crest and use a good epoxy to mount the crest to the new piece of leather all of which would be a fairly simple DIY project |

Just another thought, the colored crest on the horn button pictured might be a 356 hubcap crest- search the Pelican Parts 356 parts section under hubcaps and have a look

Thank you RS9
I would not like to make destructive alterations, meaning I would like to keep the 4 spoke steering wheel and remove the button as a whole and replace it with the 356, if such a thing is possible. Or at least keep the ring of the horn button and fix the enamel - but not on top of the leather. You said remove the leather - does it come off the surrounding horn ring? Finally yes I do have the embossed leather on the wheel. Thanks for the offer and though the steering wheel is not original for 1969, I'll keep the wood, I like it. Does anyone know if any early 911/912 model variants carried the steering wheel as pictured? Is it from an "S" as suggested by the owner? or what do you think has been done to assemble the enamel on what otherwise seems to be an identical horn button? It's hard to tell from the picture. Is that a leather covering with stitching along the inside edge? If so, that's just the standard 911 steering wheel. That said, there was a smaller diameter wheel. I think the stock wheel was 400mm and the smaller one is 380mm. I think that was a Carrera option, not an S standard. But, I could be wrong on the measurements and what cars it was standard on. The wood wheel was even bigger than the stock leather wheel.
I put a factory wood wheel on my green/tan '73 911, and am using the '73 butterfly horn center (the '73 one with the larger padded center, not the early butterfly with the round center), with an original factory 356 badge attached in the center. Looks pretty good as far as I'm concerned. If the wheel is not leather, but a plastic or rubberized type material, then it is a 914 steering wheel. Perhaps a 912 too. I don't know all the 912 options. Jay |

Is this original?
I came across this thread looking for some comparative value for the horn button from my old '69 911T that my sister in law just found in her barn! I always assumed this was original, but perhaps a previous owner glued on this enamel Porsche crest? Are all buttons like this usually just a black embossing of the crest in the center? Thanks for any information.

That's exactly mine. It's a 70's 911 horn center, with a 356 hood badge on it. Personally, I think it's one of the best, especially with the early wood wheel.

I just installed the 356 badge on my 930s wheel, it looks really nice. I don't think it would necessarily be a butcher job on an early 911...unless you plan on going concourse with it.
