Rare car unearthed '78 Turbo Targa - 1 of 1

When I had my Targa for sale I was contacted by a Porsche enthusiast who lived close by. We talked for quite a while about all things Porsche. He mentioned he had a line on a rare car... a 1978 911 Turbo Targa. Today he sent some photos. Looks like one of those cars that slipped out into the market.

That´s cool.
I never heard of pre-80 turbo targa

I would try to get it back in original condition (olive grün, wheels etc.)

Hmmm....front headlight washers are from a mid-80's car...not a 78-79.

very cool...now if you can find vintage pictures of the car with the BB plate during it's testing days!

I'm guessing that the rockers aren't original. Just like the red paint (stated as Olive Green originally), and the aftermarket front valance. Why would someone do that to such a rare, one-off 911?

A note about the front valance: I know of one 1978 Turbo that has this exact same valance, from the factory!
I would not discard any part that looks unusual. The factory did some wacky stuff at the time.

I have heard about this car before but never saw a picture until now. The early 930S slants had a similar factory front spoiler from the factory. Thanks for the posting Lee.

It's the same car. I know it was up for sale not too long ago here on Pelican I believe.

Please clarify for a stupid Swede: The rarity comes from it being a targa ??

Markus, in '78 there was no such thing as a turbo targa. Even when they were available (87-89 I think) they were rare. So this is really a one-off, AND it has factory pedigree to prove its provenance.
I think it is great in a "I'm so weird I'm beautiful" sense.

From letter:
"After this testing the engine and transmission were removed and the rolling chassis was sold to a used car dealer here in Germany".

Does this mean there is no motor/tranny in the car?

When sold there was no motor and tranny in the car. It looks like someone made changes (paint, etc) so it probably has running gear now.

You guys know Lee is Porsche-less right now. That's a frequent ailment for him but it usually passes somewhat quickly.

Lee, are you onto a possible purchase?
