Alternator Conversion Question

Hello All,

I've got a quick question about alternator conversions. I've got a 911 SC (1979) and the alternator has been upgraded/converted to a internal regulated model.... but it looks like the external regulator is still in use.... (see Photo).. Is that possible or should the wiring harness have been modified.....

Thanks,

they might have modified the wiring harness to keep it stock looking.

They must have,

I recently changed out the alternator.... verified that the dead one was a internal regulator type (like the new one) and the connection left me puzzled for a while..... could not figure out weather to modify it or leave it alone .... in the end I just replaced the alternator and it works fine.... just curious...

The black wire in the harness has no place to go with the install so it get taped off and then the regulator on the wall is inoperable.

bnr says the regulator is irrelevant

the guy at bnr who sell the valeo IR replacement says the old regulator can be left in the circuit "for show" or disconnected - says it will work the same either way

since I just ordered one, I guess I'll know more next week

bnr valeo alternator wiring update

:( well - I got the new valeo alternator last Monday - crude hand drawn sketch for wiring in the box

my install is a 914-6 ....105 housing - this is not a trivial R&R exercise

the new valeo did not work with the wiring sketch they provided - missed taking the car to Hot August Nights this week as a result -

caveat - the bnr guy was wrong about the "leaving the regulator connected for show"

(yes, it can be done if you jumper the Blue field wire fron the light and separately ground the alternator)

( well - maybe most Field wires are blue - mine was yellow from the dash, connected to black at the engine harness)

an eMail exchange resulted in a second wiring sketch - significantly different than the one in the box

1 full extra day of labor - I am not a happy camper

finally, at 5 p,m. today the valeo works as advertised per the second wiring scheme

- if i was paying $100/hr shop rate this would have been a $2000 tab

I will post the bad vs the correct wiring schemes here in a few days

I think they meant, leave the regulator on the console but re wire it. Ok for a 911 but I guess not on a 914. Live and learn, now go out and get some beer for all that cash you saved on the shop rate!!! (pay yourself first).:D
