Wacky tachy

As of late my car has been back firing at times and not running the greatest. Sure it runs pretty damn good, but something is a tad off. I'm installing cams this weekend and want to get some things in order. I'm pretty sure the wacky tachy is due to ignition and points. When I get on it, the tach gets up to around 3000 rpm's, the tach needle stops, the car revs to 6000, give or take, and then the tach needle shoots from 3000 to 6000 all at once. I'm going to adjust the points tonight along with other things, but would this be an indication of the gap being to open or to close? I'm thinking to closed, but lets say that I adjust them to specs and it does the same thing, would I increase the gap some, or decrease to compensate?
Plugs- This is an MFI car and I pretty much set plug gap to specs, but I know some increase the hell out of the gap, what does everyone suggest, these are ngk copper plugs.
Thanks much
P.S. I'm going from some ground T cams (dont ask as I have no idea what the specs are) to solex cams.
