M3's out of ALMS?

http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content.mv?port_code=autoweek&cat_code=motorsportsnews&loc_code=index&content_code=09300665

I guess it's true, if you can't beat 'em, ban 'em. But I think most folks around here agreed there was something wrong with running a full out race M3 with a non-street engine against relatively stock 911's.

The gauntlet was thrown months ago when BMW started whoopin' on Porsche, but check out that BMW rep's comment about towing the Porsche's around the track! Holy crap!

Will Porsche ever respond?

I think it is a great idea. Its true , why should a company be able to use full out RACE cars and claim that they are even similar to the Street versions.

If BMW thinks that there cars are so much better than the everyone else, looks like they are going to have to prove it.....ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, then we shall see.

But yes Porsche should get off thier A**es and work towards racing not SUVs etc , but that topic has been beaten to death.

I'm going on record again-

The SUV will have far-reaching and POSITIVE effects on Porsche's racing program- but not in the next 2+ years. Even if the SUV itself tanks big-time. That said- I wish Porsche boundless success with Cayenne, laughable name and all. If I had the clams I'd slap down a deposit on one.

Anyone seen my coffee maker post? Let me go hunt for it...

Ah-ha! Found it. I still stand by this:

As far as the Cayenne goes, I agree that it might have a huge positive impact on Porsche racing.

What did Chrysler do with the Viper? They took an engine designed for a 4500lbs truck and shoe-horned it into a featherweight roadster to make one hell of a racecar. I hope to god that if the Cayenne's engine has the straight line accelleration and raw bhp numbers we've all heard rumored, the powers that be see fit to shove that mother into a ultra light chassis and run rings around everything else on the field. Off-road, on road, wherever the fools choose to step.

And also from AutoWeek, there is a possibility of not a vee but a flat eight producing 450bhp before turbocharging. Mercy!

prattrc, I read the link and didn't have the same take as you can up with. Tom Milner has been around protype racing for several years and has been pretty successful. Not exactly a BMW rep.
ALMS has changed the rules so that BMW must produce 100 cars and 1000 engines that can be used throughtout the line.
There is a weight penalty and smaller restrictor plate for each issue. Milner admitted that it didn't look good for BMW. He said it was like putting all the Porsche that BMW has beaten on a trailer and towing it behind the BMW race car. He was obviously talking about the added weight that he would have to carry.
She if you can get your money back from Evelyn Woods.
Quityerbitihin about someone who exploits the rules to his advantage. BMW only wishes they could have been as clever as Porsche for the past 30 years.

bout time, it'd be one thing for BMW to put in the 3.2 six that's in the M3, but the V-8 essentially out of the M-5 shouldn't have even been a consideration, glad someone saw the disparity

BTW, part of the reason Porsche has been sitting on its rump regarding ALMS is because they knew the rules were ready for updating: they didn't want to develop something that adheres to today's rules, and then have to revamp everything. Smart move on Porsche, IMO.

Now that the new guidelines are in place, Porsche can refocus on ALMS and kick some BMW butt!

Just my $0.42.
