help with mfi re-install - open pipe?

we are getting ready to plug in our rebuilt MFI and need help identifying this pipe.
I'm guessing it's either left open, or part of the fume recovery system that goes to the canister in the trunk.
the photo is looking up through the heat exchanger towards the rear oil cooler on the passenger side.

thanks

That pipe is part of the air filter drain system. There should be a special rubber boot on the bottom of the pipe (shown in your picture) that is kind of a one way valve allowing any collected fluid in the bottom of the air filter to drain out and not let anything get sucked in. On the top of that pipe is a small, 7mm I think, hose that connects to the bottom rear area of the air filter assembly.

Mark, I must confess this car has been in the family over 31 years, and I've never seen that rubber valve/plug.
thanks for the tip.

That valve has a very unusual part number... "253 260 180", and is referred to as either a "valve," or a "nipple." It allows a small amount of oil to collect in the air filter drain system (usually from too much crankcase blow-by or an over-fill condition), and the pressure/weight of the oil pushes through the valve a drop at a time. There should be a length of braided-style fuel hose, 7.5 mm ID, (cut from bulk) connecting the bottom of the air filter housing to the metal tube in your picture. No clamps are required for this hose.

Once again supporting the idea they were made to leak oil...

Bill, Pictures of the pipe & valve/nipple parts.

I hope all goes well Bill.

P.S. VW part number on this valve/nipple

Mark; Very Interesting! I've never worked on VWs, where the heck is that part used, and on what models? I've also always wondered why Porsche's number for the part is so strange, but have never tried, for one reason or another, to solve the mystery.
