Best Manuals for a newbie?

Again thanks to all, for all the advice and help it has really saved me a lot of money and is great to learn. My question to you is this:

What is the best manuals to buy for everything from how to change the alternator to pulling the engine? I am very mechanically inclined but do not know anything about Porsche's I ordered the tech manuals which I am sure will give me a understanding of things but since all or most or you have done work on your car, I am sure you did not go to Porsche mechanic school..(lol)

So please feel free to throw out any and all suggestions:

I have a 1986 911 Tubo,

Thanks again,

Richard

The factory service manuals tend to be rather expensive (around $400 for the set). Bentley is a good compromise. However it is not geared specifically to the Turbo.
IF you are looking at performance upgrade, I would look at Bruce Anderson's book.
Obviously there is Wayne's book - 101 projects.

Not looking for high performance upgrades just yet. Looking kinda for a how to remove book. Kinda like the Chiltons manuals. They used to tell you how to change to oil to rebuiling the engine.

I will need to replace the VR and I dont even know where the freaking thing is..lol

I feel like an idiot on Porsche's

i've collected:

1). factory service manuals (late '60's to late '80's)
2). bentley manual
3). haynes manual
4). chilton manual
5). bruce anderson's performance handbook
6). 101 projects for your porsche
7). various pelican parts posts and technical articles.
8). '74 - '89 parts and technical refernce manual
9). porsche PET CD

i use every one of them for various reasons. the one i use least is bruce anderson's performance handbook (no offense). the ones i use most are a combination of PP posts and articles and the factory service manuals.

Richard,

I currently have the Bentley manual and the 2 vol. factory service manual for the turbo. While this is okay, I would like to have more detailed materials to reference. I guess Warren is right, we should go for the factory set. But I wonder if the 72-83 and 84-89(?) would suffice. It seems that the pre-73 stuff would be mostly irrelevant. If anyone knows about this, please let us know. I am interested in buying these manuals in CD format- if anyone has a copy I could look at , that would be great.

And you can pick Waynes book up at your local Barnes & Noble. I saw two copies at mine the other day, but they only had one copy of the Bentley. I'm thinking they needed two because they realize sales volume will be high. As soon as I have the extra bucks I'm going to get it. I leafed through it... excellent!
