911 fourm too big

Hey, I think the 911 forum is way too cluttered, there are so many posts and many of them have nothing to do with Porsches or have little to do with them. I emailed Wayne last night suggesting to split it up by years. He said he tried it, and nobody liked it. I was just wondering why.
I also suggested adding forums like technical questions, general questions, stereos, how to help, current events, pictures, section for clubs by area, and a tales from the track forum where people can talk about their track experiences. What do you guys think?

FWIW, there already is a "general" forum, a "track/autox" forum, an "off topic rant" forum, etc.

Nobody goes there...

Now let's think about why the forum may be cluttered. Uh, yeah, people must like it the way it is.

I take the view that as this forum now covers pretty much everything, it increases the size of the peanut gallery (like me), thus increasing the traffic, thus giving the forum the critical mass needed to keep it going.

I think if it was purely technical there is a possibility that, perversely, the quality of the contributions to the tech questions would actuall decrease.

I like it how it is - interesting - I can check it lots of times in a day and there is new stuff.

"Way too cluttered"? On any given day their may be 20-30 new post. It takes me about 5 minutes to scan these and check out the ones that interest me. Much easier then checking a half dozen of more separate subsections. Seems strange your very first post would be a complaint about this board. Come up with a good post that we can all benefit from. Pelican has become the most popular 911 board available - I wouldn't change a thing.

Yea, don't take it wrong, but if you have a problem with the whole "community" aspect of the board, then go read a "strictly technical" book. There is personality on the board for a good reason, the people who are regulars here like it!

seperate it? Then I would have to go to 20 different areas to read and post stuff. nah, I'd rather have everything right here, on one page, right in front of me.

It only takes a few seconds to scan down thru the post titles. I think everybody does a good job of titling their posts so it is fairly easy to sort thru them.

Leave it the way it is. The discussion is always enjoyable on all levels and topics....and I enjoy reading about issues related to years/models other than mine, as well as the OT and track posts.

Nick.

I think segregating everyone according to their car and specific topic would eliminate much of the "quirky" humor that is rampant on this board. I check this site repeatedly throughout the day, and most times I walk away not only enlightened but also entertained.

I love it the way it is... even though sometimes people post pictures of thier SO washing a car under a new user name

Thumbs down

Let me see if I got this straight, gray rodent. This is your first post on this board. Post number one? Yet you know all about how to "fix" this board? Excuse me? Oh please, let me join your list of apostles. We all await your next suggestion. Just as soon as we see pigs fly!

I must agree with everyone else. Not only is it educational with the variety of cars, its also fun to get to know guys on the board. Not only that, but look in the owners gallery under 911 owners.....what....130 or something. Look under 930.....8? So much of these cars are the same. I appreciate all the input from all the guys that are willing to answer all my stupid questions. Splitting everyone up would ruin the community feel of this site.

I like it the way it is. If you want a nice quiet civilised BBS try www.pcapotomac.org

I like the humour and it's good to see the lunatic fringe being so well supported in this BBS

Re: 911 fourm too big

Too Big?

I have a solution for you. This BBS has an "ignore" feature by which you can selectively eliminate the folks who you deem to be adding to the clutter that you see.

You can create your own private, nifty little board.

This way, the rest of us who like the board as it is now can continue to enjoy the varied topics and personalities that roam this excellent board . . . and you will be pleased as well.

The path to your personal Pelican nirvana is in your hands. Do you not think it is silly that your personal preferences should trump the rest of us folks who like things as they are now?

Personally, I find your single post and your "email to Wayne" a bit immature and will consider placing you on "ignore" if you are not able to offer a more compelling topic to this very popular and valuable discussion group.

Respectfully,

Kurt

Here's why we keep it this way. There are alot of questions that can be answered about a particular era by someone of another era. For example, several body and chasis parts are interchangable between the 1965 911 and the 1989 911 Carrera, and all the cars that come inbetween. The motors from the SC and the carrera are almost identical, same with all the early 911s. Now here's the problem with breaking them up. You wont get help from other years. Look at the 912 board for example. The only difference is the engine. A lot of the questions are about the car itself, not the engine, so why don't the 911 guys post input on the board? Because its not their model. (sorry to the few that do, your help and comments are greatly appriciated) So you see, if you seperate the board you will loose a lot of valuable help from other models and years.
