911 Thermostat Question

I'm reading all these post ...testing the thermostat on your car to see if its the cause for overheating, i see on different diagrams they're spring loaded, what will happen if you remove the guts of the thermostat on an older 2.7 motor where the oil move freely through the thermostat housing? there is no ECU reporting the thermostat is open status but how will it affect the performance of the vehicle....will the vehicle stay cooler that way?

Will the engine stay cooler? Not likely. It will take longer to warm up as the cold oil will be flowing through the cooler from the get-go but eventually the oil will heat and flow through as it did with the thermostat guts inplace, resulting in the same temperatures. You may see a slight drop in temp because the oil flow is not restricted by the thermostat guts but, IMO, I doubt if it is significant enough to notice.

Experts can confirm or correct this, but you may risk a blow out of the oil cooler during a cold start as the thermostat closes it off from the high pressures. The pressure relief valve keeps the pressure down, but if it sticks or is slow to open, you will be pumping very high pressure oil through an open oil cooler.

IMO it wouldn't help. That is an old trick for water cooled engines with a fairly restrictive thermostat. 911 engines have good flow and the cooler is too sensitive for the pressures that might occur. If you want to test it just heat it on the stove in a pan with water and a thermometer to see when it opens. IF faulty the temp will be too high on open.
