Need several bits of help
 

Well - Just tried to locate my oil leaks on my 84 3.2. I don't think I was successful. Here's what I've found.

There is oil running down the center of the case, and around the drain for the case. Don't know where that is coming from. Guess it could be coming from anywhere.

There is oil dripping around the lower bolts/studs on the exhaust valve covers (both sides).

There is a lot of oil around #6 on the cylinder, head and oil cooler. There is some but not as much over around # 3.

There was a lot of gunked on oil around the pressure idiot light switch.

Here's what I was thinking of trying:

Exhaust valve covers.

Idiot light gasket.

And while I have the car up - change oil (which I'll need to do when I do valve covers anyway) and transmission fluid.

Here are the questions -

What else could be leaking oil on top of the engine, and where should I look?

What gasket do I need for the idiot light?

What size hex head wrench do I need for the transmission fluid drain/fill?

check all the banjo fittings. I had one leaking it took me a long time to find it.

Left and Right Cam Oil Line at the Banjo or leaking hose at the Banjo Crimp.

Idiot Light switch is also suspect

If you haven't, the best thing to do is first clean it all up and then start your search. The oil pressure light usually leaks through the assembly, not around it. Out of the connector. A loose/ hardened oil breather hose in back of the intake is another suspect. Both of these put oil on top of the engine which can then show up a lot of places. These proved to be my culprits. The valve cover leaks are the easiest to spot. Again, maybe need a clean up first. Being leak free is more of a journey than a destination. Ken

Tranny FILL/DRAIN plugs are 17MM if i recall

17 mm is right for the drain and fill plugs. make sure you can loosen the fill plug before you loosen the drain plug.

I've ordered the following:

New Breather hose to tank (thanks Gerry).

New breather from oil tank to air filter housing.

New Idiot light switch.

New thermostat o-ring

silicon valve cover gaskets (and nuts and washers).

We'll see how this goes. I almost did a cold air intake, because I hate that lower clip in the box so much, but I didn't want to spend $200.

I will sometimes use a oil dye and UV light after cleaning it down. Run the engine a few minutes then use the light and glasses. Makes finding the leaks much easier.

Don't forget the oil return tubes. The cooling fan blows oil out to the heads and makes it look like it's coming from the valve cover gaskets. also, if you can get it, change the oil breather gasket. And seal it well, only want to do that job once.
