Only the number on the pump can tell what type it is. It looks like Bosch to me.
See if you can open the clamp, clean the visible side of the pump and if you're lucky, the number might show.

If it's Bosch, I have a spec table.
The nipple for banjo connection could be a check valve or not; they are about the same size.

The short rubber fuel line is just an ordinary type off a roll. Parts stores will have it. 12 mm is prefered or 1/2" will do. European car shops have the metric 12 mm.

When replacing the line or pump, an empty tank is prefered because no matter how you do it, gas will spill.

Anyone mentioned the starter?

Since your initial post was light on detials, let me ask. Does the car start just fine the first time, but then after driveing for a while, you shut the car off (go into the store and come back ) and now it won't start again? I had this problem, and it was related to the old starter. Since all the amps go though the key and then to the started, the resistance goes up when the car is warm. The old starters draw too much, and you can't get it to start. Do a search on Warm start starter problems. If you replace with a High amp new starter this problem may go away. Long story short, it may not be fuel related at all.

I do have a new (2 years) hi-torque starter. It cranks over w/no problem.

Sort of like the Writing on the wall of a bath room I remember "No matter how you shake or dance, the last few drops will fall in to your Pants!" Yes, I use a large Oil catch pan and the Banjo has a small spring and ball in it that makes the Check Valve. I had one where the fuel came in and where it went out! Hard to mess up two at the same time. I would actually modify mine for more fuel flow by increasing the size of the Hole where the Check Ball sits.

Here are the FP specs:

Bosch
506
made in Czech Republic
0 580 254 967
911. 608. 102. 02

I don't think the Czech Republic existed in 1982, so it must be a newer FP.

Bosch 0 580 254 967 comes up with the right specs like 5 bar, correct volume, 12 mm inlet etc. but it doesn't tell me if it has an internal check valve.

It is a somewhat newer pump and I would re-use it.

Your choice is to order the external check valve, dismantle the banjo fitting and if there is a check valve in there, replace it with the new one.

If you suspect that the pump has a malfunctioning internal check valve, install the new external check valve and try that.

When you open the short fuel line to drain the tank, check for debris coming out.

Will do.

I have a new external check valve coming (fri or mon) and will install it then.

Not burning off much of the gas in the tank as it snowed 10-12" last nite.

Installed new FP check valve.

Started cold.

Started when warm.

It's only been tested 1x, but...

Thanks for all the help!

JB,
Did you find an old external check valve in the banjo connection or was it just a nipple?

jbiebl 05-04-2010 09:07 AM

Luckily, an external check valve was there.

I'll let everybody know if it continues to work.

thanks
jb
