914 Transmission To 911 ?
Wanted to know if there is any difference in a 1972 914/ 1.7 engine (transmission)? And a 1966 911 with a 2.2 engine. Is both a 901 transmission? Looking to replace my 911 5-speed transmission due to bad first gear. If these are the same what should I look for to make sure I get a good one?

Well, besides the fact that they are turned around (remember the 914 has the engine in front of the trans), the internals are basically the same.
You need to find a 911 trans, unless you feel like doing about $1500 in machine work to a $250 914 transmission to 'flip it' the other way! Cheers,

hi,
I just went through the same situation with my 1966 901 transmission.. i sheared the input shaft and scrapped the first gear assembly in the proccess (trying to break the land speed record in first gear) If only the first gear is what's wrong on your 1966 901 , you can take it from your 914 and install it on you 901, it is very easy and pelicanparts has a very good technical paper written on how to do it. the parts are exactly the same and furthermore you don't have to detail strip your 901 transmission , just remove the nosecone, hence not having to remeasure the intermediate case gasket thickness which is very important, hope it works out for you, cheers, JCB |

66,
Unfurtunately, on the 911 this job can't be done in situ. you need to drop the transmission and engine package.. please go to : http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_tranny_repair/914_tranny_repair.htm it explains everything in detail, much better than what i could do here, Have fun, let me know how it turns out, JCB Last edited by Porscheguy; 12-09-2001 at 04:07 PM.. |

Hello
Basically the 914 trany will fit into the 911 if you change the nosecone with shifterrods, speedodrive and flip R&P. The internals are similar only the gearring idsdifferent. The 914 trany is not a cheaper made 911 unit. In fact the 914 improvements where used in the 911. A other detail is that the 914 trany housing was made to fet the 1302 Superbeetle and has a slight different bellhousing and the later intermediate plate will not have the thread hole for the throttle linkage. They also have a little VW Logo on the side. If you have a bad first gear then don´t hope any used trany is better. Fix what you have will cost less like buying used and fix what you have for the same money and return it again. Only if the saler will bear the risk ( waranty ) or you can testdrive it makes sens to buy a used unit. Grüsse |
