Speaker wires defined? Argh!
 

Hey everyone,


I spent the afternoon today pulling out the PO's cell phone amplifier, weak stereo amplifier, and defunct ignition kill switch. All three were dead, and there had to be about 100' of wiring under the dash and in the trunk. It was a mess.

I got everything removed and cleaned up. However, one thing that I missed is the wiring diagram for the speakers and power wires coming from the car. Basically, I'm down to speaker and power wires coming out of the rear of the head unit, and a bundle of wrapped original wires.

I checked Wayne's book, Bentley, and these forums. No luck. Anyone have a listing of the stock color-coded wires? I'm guessing there are LR, LF, RR, RF, Ground, Always-on power, and Ignition-on power wires.

The car in question is an '88 Carrera.

Speaker designation wires. LF:BRN, BRN/WHT. RF:BRN, BRN/BLK. These soon change to both being BRN, BLK/WHT to either side. LR: YEL, BRN/YEL. RR: RED, BRN/RED. Both stay the same to the speaker. If your are ever not sure, take an ohmeter that is set for resistance and brush the connectors against the wiring. You will hear a slight sound of static from the speaker attached. Better yet, invest in a Bentley manual. Worth its price many times over. Bentley has it on page 970-84, Electrical wiring diagrams for 1988-89 sound systems.

there is an easy trick to figure this out; grab a 9 volt battery and touch the speaker wire to the terminals. (just for a second). Look around and see which speaker cone jumps a little bit, and you've got your answer. This can also be used to determine the polarity of the speaker leads; if you touch the wires to the battery and the cone moves in, they're backwards and should be swapped + for -. have fun... :)

Sorry just a try:

LR = Brown/white
LF = Brown/Green
RR = Brown/yellow
RF = Brown/Red

To test the speacker wires use a 4,5V block battery and run the cirrcuit. the speaker on the end from the line will make a short "plop" as he jumbs out or jumps in ( Depending on polarity )

Ground = Brown
Always-on power = red
Ignition-on power = yellow or black/red
Antenna power = green or white/pink
Illumination = gray or black/blue

Those wires can be simple checked with a disode tester
