Hey Guy's I have a bit of a crazy question. I have read in mauels that you are suppose to check the oil of the 911 while it's runningat idle and around 175 in temp... but when I open the oil cap the car starts to act as if it's going to die!! what gives .. I have been checking it now with the car warmed up and then I shut it off and run to the back and check it this seems to be working fine all the Gauges read fine and the oil hit's right in the middle of the stick. can you guy's maybe tell me why my cars wants to die every time I remove the oil cap to check the oil the way the manuel says to do it. and if I have been doing wrong! by the way i have been going about checking it to date.

when you take the cap off you create a vacuum leak, thats the deal with the idle. dont worry about it it happens to all of us.

When I check my oil ('78SC) I shut the car off. You enough time to pop the lid and check the oil before it drains down in the tank enough to show a low reading. I have checked the oil with the car on, then shut it down and checked again - many times, same reading. Try this and see for yourself. |
i thought one of the prerequisites was not only warm, but idling as well???
it happenes to my car too and I will usually reach back into the engine and blip the throttle to keep her alive...mine doesn't get so bad as to stall though.... |

This is really interesting. None of my Porsches has done this, not even a noticeable idle change. Maybe because the newest I've owned was a '75?
Are later models more sensitive to the vacuum change? Do the latest air-cooled engines do this? |
You really should take Bill's advice above if you are still wondering about the stalling when the oil cap is removed from '81-83 SC.

My '86 idles a little rough when the oil cap is off but never dies. It is a vacuum leak. And yes, that vacuum leak is part of the emissions control - older cars won't do it.
I don't really understand why you would feel the need to turn the engine off when checking the oil. It's not like something in there is going to jump out and bite you! Just keep the fingers away from the fan and belts and everything will be al right! |
Well, don't ever stick your head down there with a tie on- I would hate to see the results of a tie wrapped around the belt.

I turn it off due to the fact it dies on me... otherwise i wouldn't. So I guess I may have to look into this a bit further since it shouldn't die on me. Thanks Guy's ..

My '78 doesn't die when I take the oil cap off, it only idles down and rough. I shut the car off for two reasons:
1) it doesn't make a difference in the oil level on the stick if you check it quickly. 2) it is far safer not to be fiddling around reaching over a turning fan and belts if you don't have to. Check this method for yourself, it certainly is easy enough to verify. |
Hey I was wondering if you had a pic to post of your car.. i'd like to see what the GT2 kit looks like on the 78 SC .. Since i have a 78 Sc as well.
