Voltage Regulator madness

79 911sc, 85k on the clock. My tach needle has recently decided to go crazy bouncing all over from time to time and when it does I can hear the normal fuel pump buzz double in intensity , but it comes and goes.. to be safe I stopped driving it for the moment. I searched here for a bit then checked when it is happens and it reads 17v to the battery then drops back to 13-14v . I will go ahead and throw a new regulator in there as it is only $37 from Wayne but -

Does it seem logical that a voltage regulator could work hit or miss like this ? If this part doesnt fix it Ill yank the alternator and have it bench tested but a $37 fix sure would be nice.

Thanks Gang.

Happened to me with my 82 but it had internal reg. I replaced alt and reg and was perfect afterwards.

Before the fix lights would go bright then dim, tach would bounce crazy once in a while, and at one point I thought battery would explode (bulging).

If you have external reg start there.

I was driving my '88 one day and noticed that something smelled "hot". Got home and the battery was so hot I could not keep my hand on it for more then a second or so. Voltage at batt with car running was over 17 volts!

A bad voltage reg is a dangerous issue. Electrical items can be damaged and batteries have been known to explode.

I will be putting a gauge or meter to monitor alternator output in my car.
